The War Merit Cross (German: Kriegsverdienstkreuz) was a decoration of Nazi Germany during the Second World War, which could be awarded to civilians as well as military personnel. It was reissued in 1957 by the Bundeswehr in a De-Nazified version for veterans. The War Merit Medal (German: Kriegsverdienstmedaille) was instituted on 19 August 1940 to recognize outstanding service by civilians in connection with the war effort. The medal was restricted to civilians and was awarded predominantly to those working in war factories.

WARMERIT #47160C War Merit Medal

This war merit medal is about the size of a fifty cent piece and it is a good bronze strike.

The obverse depicts an Iron Cross with wreathed swastika in the center and on the reverse it is dated 1939 and in German cites “For War Service”.

A good example of a common, basic, an unremarkable medal here.

The case of this medal is in relatively good condition showing some minor wear to the surfaces. It also has the silver embossed image on the surface. The inside has a padded silk liner. The base is of black felt with the slot containing the medal.

The medal depicts a Maltese Cross with wreathed swastika in the center being pierced by two swords. It shows wear to the original silvering with only traces here and there. It is a zinc based type.

The reverse has a double style barrel hinge with Coke bottle type pin. The catch is soldered directly to the medal. This piece is marked “3”.

It is in the form of a Maltese Cross with pebbling inside the legs and a smooth border. A raised wreathed swastika occupies the center of the medal. The whole affair is pierced by crossed swords.

The reverse has a barrel hinge, a "Coke bottle" pin, and a soldered catch.

A good example here, with honest period wear.

This 1st Class War Merit Cross is the zinc type. Most of the silvered finish has been lost to time, although there are traces remaining on the edges of the legs.

It is in the form of a Maltese Cross with pebbling inside the legs and a smooth border. A raised wreathed swastika occupies the center of the medal. The whole affair is pierced by crossed swords.

The reverse has an integral hinge and a separate, “Coke bottle” pin, and an integral catch.

This 1st Class War Merit Cross with Swords is a fine bronze strike. The Maltese Cross has smooth edges and a finely pebbled center. There is fine detail to the wreath, swastika, and crossed swords.

The reverse has a barrel hinge with a “Coke Bottle” pin. The catch is soldered directly to the medal.

A good medal here, with just traces of wear and usage.

This 1st Class War Merit Cross is a fine bronze strike. It is in the form of a Maltese Cross with pebbling inside the legs and a smooth border. A wreathed swastika occupies the center of the medal.
