It was reissued in 1957 by the Bundeswehr in a De-Nazified version for veterans. The War Merit Medal (German: Kriegsverdienstmedaille) was instituted on 19 August 1940 to recognize outstanding service by civilians in connection with the war effort. WARMERIT #33913 Imperial Bavarian Merit Cross 2nd Class with Swords

This Imperial Bavarian Merit Cross looks similar to a Third Reich Merit Cross as far at the legs of the medal go. They are pebbled silver and have a “V” slot at the end of each leg.

The center area differs in that it is a medallion type addition which is all in enamel. A white border has raised silver writing, “Mfrenti” and in the center is the cipher of Leopold with a Bavarian crown over a capital letter “L”. Leopold of course was the Regent in Bavaria during the Great War. At the top of the cross is a set of crossed swords and above that a fleur de lis type device.

There is a loop connected and this of course retains the ribbon which is white ribbed satin with stripes of blue, white, black and white on each side. The silvering is still quite good on this medal and the enamel areas in the center are in perfect condition. The reverse of the medal has the date in a medallion addition in the center being, “1866” with a crowned lion standing on his hind legs.

WARMERIT #26859 2nd Class Bronze War Merit Cross with Swords and Ribbon

This 2nd Class War Merit Cross is one of the early strikes, having a rich, bronze finish. It consists of a Maltese style cross having stippling to all of the legs. In the center is a round wreath which contains a raised out mobile swastika. Roman-like swords pierce the center areas.

The reverse is the same, except the date “1939" replaces the swastika in the center. There is a loop at the top to which a ribbon would be placed through. In this case, the ribbon accompanies the badge, but has never been threaded through the loop.

This ribbon still remains in choice condition. It is a textured satin having a black stripe in the center with stripes of white and red which run out on both edges.
