EARLY, MID-PERIOD AND LATE SA SECTION - PART II

SAEML-30-27517 - EARLY SA - E & F HÖRSTER

This early SA is in top-notch condition throughout. The cross guards and tang nut are produced as early solid nickel material. The surfaces are smooth throughout and the edges still remain crisp. The cross guard on the lower is the type which is more straight across than we normally see. The accent grooves throughout are deeply cut. The lower reverse cross guard is Gau. stamped “NRH”. The grip of this example appears to be a mahogany wood. It is of medium to sharp contour construction. The wood is in choice condition throughout, showing only the most nominal of wear. This grip fits the cross guards absolutely like a glove. The SA runes button is nicely positioned and has all of the enamel surfaces intact. The nickel grip eagle matches the patination of the cross guards and it is the “high-necked” type. Full features are visible to the head, beak, breast feathering, wing feathering, wreath and mobile swastika. The scabbard shell is straight on the reverse, having just the tiniest of a “bb” style dent around the one-third portion of the obverse. This dent is nothing, however. The scabbard surfaces appear to have an anodized finish, but it also possible that this is paint. Some of these early daggers were done with painted surfaces contrary to popular belief. Whatever the surfaces are here, though, it is still 100%, having some minor carrying signs but not enough to affect the quality of this trace scabbard. The scabbard mounts are matching early nickel and they are retained by the four nickel screws which are all in place and are unturned. The lower ball has never been dropped. There is also an early short hanger attached, the leather is still supple and it is complete with a small retainer loop. The hardware is the early solid nickel type with the snap clip being marked on the reverse “A” and “drgm”. This hanger shows nominal usage signs but it is still very sound. The blade of this example is nice and bright. There are still visible signs of original factory grain in both surfaces. There is some minor smudge in a couple of areas, but it is not bad and does not adversely affect the blade’s rating. This blade is still in near full mint condition. The SA motto is very deeply etched and has a frosted background which still appears to be there at 100%. The reverse ricasso is etched with the large double ovals used by this firm. The ovals trap the firm’s name and location “E & F Hörster Solingen”. Inside is the large “H” letter which features a smaller “h” and “s” in the center being pierced by a sword. The blade shoulders perfectly meet the lower cross guard contour. A fine dagger here and not an easy maker to find in early Sas.Mint Minus. $1,295.00(#092608)

SAEML-31-27521 - EARLY SA - GEB. BÖHME NACHF, BROTTERODE

This early SA dagger has never been cleaned and reflects a dull nickel patination throughout. The cross guards appear to have good, smooth surfaces and crisp accent grooves. Studying the tang nut, there is no sign that the dagger has ever been apart. The reverse cross guard is stamped with the Gau. mark “Sa”. Outstanding cross guards here. The grip appears to be a gunstock type wood, possibly walnut. It has high-ridge construction and is extremely crisp. There are some interesting grains which run vertically on the obverse and on the reverse have a slight swirl to their designs. This grip is extremely appealing. It fits the cross guards absolutely like a rubber glove. The SA runes button is nicely placed and has no fractures to the enameling. The nickel grip eagle matches the patination of the other nickel parts and has exceptional detail to the high-necked bird. This bird shows no wear whatsoever. An outstanding hilt here! The scabbard shell is in choice, straight condition. It has good anodized surfaces, being the more purple color style. There are a couple of rust marks here and there but, basically, this anodizing is near 100% and still in nice, pleasing condition. The scabbard mounts match the patination of the hilt fittings. They are in perfect condition throughout to include the lower ball. These mounts are retained by nickel screws which are all original and are unturned. There is a short hanger which most-likely is original to the piece. The leather shows quite a bit of age and is starting to lose its texture and strength, but it is still there. The retainer loop has gone to time. The hanger mounts are the early nickel type and the snap clip is the standard shape variety, being unmarked on the reverse. The blade is still bright and does have all of its cross graining the surfaces. There are a few stains in the surfaces of both sides, but they are minor and this blade still grades near mint. It has a very deep-etched motto with dark black backgrounds. This is one of the makers that liked to use a paint-like background which has a great effect when the blade is removed. The reverse is almost in full mint condition and it is matching etched with the maker mark. It consists of two ovals which trap the firm’s name and location, “GEB. BÖHME NACHF, BROTTERODE”. The inside of the ovals are plain. This blade perfectly meets the contours of the cross guard. A pretty good dagger here and for those who like untouched examples, this is a beauty. Excellent Plus. $995.00

SAEML-32-27534 – EARLY SA – GEB. HELLER

This early SA dagger shows some overall usage but it is still in collectible condition. The nickel hilt fittings are outstanding, having crisp edges, smooth surfaces and precise accent grooves. This dagger does not appear to have been apart. The reverse lower cross guard is stamped with the Gau. marking “Th”. The grip appears to be a mahogany wood. It is of medium contour construction and is still in perfect condition. There is some pleasing grains under the surfaces. The wood has a reddish tint to its color. The grip fits the cross guards nicely throughout. The SA runes button is nicely placed, having excellent enamel surfaces. The grip eagle is a nickel variety, being the style with beak which points upward slightly. The details to the bird’s head, breast feathering, wing feathering, wreath and mobile swastika are excellent. A good hilt here! The scabbard shell is straight throughout. The anodized surfaces are beginning to thin and there is a little bit of age spread here and there. The nickel mounts are in place, the top example being in excellent condition and the lower mount have a crushed ball which is split and tilted to the left side. This is a shame, but these can be repaired for a nominal fee if you want to contact me about it. The upper mount also has a small split in the edge. The screws appear original to this piece and are unbuggered. The blade of this example is slightly gray throughout. It does have a good shape and no sharpening problems. The motto etch is precise and looks as though it had a very dark background when new. The background is worn slightly and remains at about 90%. The reverse ricasso is the type which is stamped horizontally with this maker’s name “Gebr. Heller”. This blade grades at about only excellent. The blade shoulders perfectly meet the cross guard contour. This dagger shows a few problems but is priced accordingly. Excellent. $495.00

SAEML-33-27073 - EARLY SA - HUGO BERNS

This SA dagger does not look to have ever been cleaned. It is also a rare maker, the first of which I have seen. The cross guards have a dull nickel patination and, studying the tang nut area, it appears as though this dagger has never been apart. These nickel guards are still crisp, having good, precise accent lines. The reverse cross lower cross guard is Gau. marked “Wf”. The grip is a darker color brown wood, not appearing to have a lot of grain in its surfaces. There is a little bit of “tap-tap” markings on the reverse lower area where someone must have used this dagger for a hammer, but it is not bad. The rest of the grip is in perfect condition throughout and fits the cross guards like a glove. This grip is of high-ridge construction. The SA runes button is nicely placed and has perfect enamel. The nickel grip eagle is the “high-necked” version. It, too, has matching patination and the detail is still there to the head, breast feathering, wing feathering, wreath and raised swastika. The scabbard shell is almost straight throughout, having just a tiny ding at the obverse three-quarter point and also a small one at the center reverse edge area. These are not bad, though, and are more carrying signs than anything else. The anodizing is a darker, more purple color. It appears to be all there, having some age in it, but not much. A nice shell here. The matching nickel scabbard mounts are also in good condition. These mounts have excellent patination and the lower ball is still in good, undropped condition. These mounts are retained by the original nickel screws, which are unturned. The blade of this example still has most of the cross graining in its surfaces, but does have some light age across both areas. It is not bad, though, and most of this could be removed with just a little work with some semi-chrome. This blade is still a nice one beneath the light age marks. The etch is crisp and has about 98% of its original background. The reverse ricasso is etched with an ellipse having the block-lettered name “HUBEO” inside. At the top and bottom is the firm’s name and location “Hugo Berns/Solingen-Ohligs”. The blade shoulders perfectly fit the lower cross guard contour. Not a bad dagger here and, if you are collecting “types”, I will bet that you need this one.
Excellent Plus. $995.00

SAEML-35-26991 - EARLY SA - CARL EICKHORN

This early SA is a fine, desirable example which does not look to have been cleaned in many years. Looking at the top of the tang and the cross guard, this dagger has never been apart. The cross guards are nice and crisp with smooth surfaces and deep accent grooves, typical of this producer. These cross guards are either the “He” style or possibly the “AR” style inside, as both were used by this producer. The grip is quite beautiful, being a mahogany wood. This mahogany has pleasing swirls of graining in the surfaces. It is of medium-ridge contour construction and it nicely fits the cross guards. This grip is in perfect condition. The SA runes button has a coppery look to its surfaces and the enamel is 100%. There is a fine, matching nickel grip eagle being the “high-necked” version. All of the details remain to this bird, including the eye, beak, breast feathering, wing feathering, wreath and raised swastika. The condition of this eagle is a testament to the little use this dagger has sustained. The scabbard shell is also a fine example, being straight throughout. It appears to have all of its anodized finish. There is some minor scratching and usage signs that show in the lacquered area but do not seem to go down to the anodizing. A nice looking shell here. The nickel scabbard mounts are in good shape throughout to include the lower ball. These mounts are retained by the original nickel screws which are unbuggered. An excellent scabbard here. The blade of this piece is in terrific condition. It is mirror mint as it comes out of the scabbard, having all of its cross graining. It also has a very dark, deeply etched motto which is easily 100%. This blade is in full mint condition, even having a slight aura over the trademark on the reverse ricasso. This trademark is the early large double oval style. The ovals trap the firm’s name and location “Carl Eickhorn Solingen”. Inside is a seated rodent having a smooth tail. This squirrel is positioned over the firm’s initials “C.E.”. The blade shoulders perfectly meet the lower cross guard contour. There is no Gau. stamping or inspection number on this cross guard. A very fine Eickhorn dagger here and extremely desirable. If you are only going to buy one, this should fill the bill. Untouched Near Mint. $1,395.00

SAEML-37-27007 - EARLY SA - WILHELM HOPPE

This early SA dagger has a rather golden glow about it, having been exposed to many years of nicotine and smoke. The cross guards of this example are very crisp and have good, smooth edges with precise accent grooves. This dagger, through studying the tang nut and upper guard, shows no sign of having ever been apart. The lower cross guard is marked on the reverse with the Gau. stamping “Wf”. The grip is a smooth contour type and has a nice brown color with a very subtle grain running across the surfaces with quite a bit of space in between the lines. It almost looks like a burl effect. There is a crack in the cross guard at the reverse upper area, but other than this, it looks to be in good condition throughout. The SA runes button has the same nicotine golden color as the guards. Its surfaces are in perfect condition. The nicotined “high-necked” grip eagle still has good detail to his head, breast feathering, wing feathering, wreath and swastika. A nice looking hilt here for those who like the uncleaned approach. The scabbard shell is straight throughout. This scabbard has excellent anodizing, or it may even be a painted surface. It is a rich brown color and does have some scratches and normal carrying signs in the surfaces. Overall, though, this paint is about 90%. The scabbard mounts have the same golden color as the cross guards. These mounts are in excellent condition to include the lower ball. The screws are in place and are unbuggered. The original-to-the piece short hanger has good leather throughout. The small regain loop has gone to time. The hanger hardware is the all nickel type and it has the same matching patination of nicotine. The snap clip is stamped in the back with a large “A” and also “DRGM”. The blade of this example is still bright throughout. It has a little bit of age in the surfaces, but not much. This blade still grades in near mint condition. The SA motto is nice and crisp and appears to have nearly 100% of its frosted backgrounds. The reverse area also has good graining in the surfaces, appearing to be near 100%. The reverse ricasso is etched with the double ovals of this firm. The ovals trap the firm’s name and location “Wilhelm Hoppe Solingen”. Inside is what appears to be a hair brush or something resembling this. The blade shoulders perfectly meet the lower cross guard contour. A fine, untouched dagger here and not too common of a producer.
Excellent Plus Plus. $1,195.00

SAEML-38-27060 – EARLY SA – GEBRU. HELLER

This is a 1st class fine condition SA dagger throughout. The cross guards are excellent construction, having crisp edges, smooth surfaces and precise accent grooves. The dagger may have been apart once or twice, but there is no burring to the nut. The lower cross guard reverse is Gau. marked “Th”. The grip is a very handsome deep mahogany having a very rich furniture-like look to its surfaces. This mahogany has some subtle graining which seems to run diagonally in the surfaces. This grip is an extremely beautiful item and it is constructed with medium contours. The grip is in totally perfect condition throughout. The SA runes button is nicely mounted with no problems to the enamel. The nickel grip eagle is the “high-necked” version and this bird has full details to his head, breast feathering, wing feathering, wreath and raised swastika. You will not see a prettier hilt than this example. The scabbard shell is completely straight throughout. For once, all of the anodizing is still on these surfaces. It has a nice cherry-like glow to it, perfectly matching the grip. This scabbard shell is a real beauty. The nickel scabbard mounts are also in perfect condition to include the lower ball. They are retained with the original nickel screws having unburred, unturned grooves. The short hanger is also a good condition one. The leather is still quite crisp, although it is missing the little retaining loop. Nonetheless, it looks good, having solid nickel hardware. The buckle is the style which is marked on the reverse with a “A” and “DRGM”. An outstanding outside here! The blade of this example is no disappointment. It, too, is mirror bright and has all of its cross graining. The SA motto is deeply etched and has very black darkening in the backgrounds. This blade is in full mint condition. The reverse ricasso is stamped horizontally just below the center ridge “Gebr. Heller”. This mint blade nicely meets the cross guard contour with its blade shoulders. If you are looking for a really choice SA dagger and you just want to buy one, this example should fill the bill. Mint. $1,495.00
