Red Cross Hewer No Maker
This Red Cross
Hewer is as nice as you will find them. It has all of the nickel
plating throughout the pommel and crossguard areas. Even the sharp
edges of the pommel have all of the plating. The crossguard has
a fine oval depiction, presenting the eagle with half-closed wings,
with vaulted mobile swastika, at his chest. This bird is clutching
a cross. The reverse oval is just as nice, being in new-like condition.
The grip plates are the standard black bakelite type, the obverse
having a checkered finish, and the reverse having a smooth finish.
These plates are retained by screw and spanner hardware. There
is a little bit of surface rust on the two screws, but they look
unturned. The scabbard is straight throughout. This shell has
outstanding original black paint. This paint shows only the most
nominal signs of any usage, but really rates in near full mint
condition. The lower fitting is in choice condition, being the
style which is pressed into place. The upper fitting
also has all of the nickeling, and is retained by two dome head
nickel screws. There is a fine black leather frog. This frog has
4-rivet construction and is in fine near full mint condition.
The reverse of the frog is stamped with the capital letter H.
The blade is an outstanding sawback variety. The original crossgraining
is all there, and the surfaces of this blade are near mint. The
reverse ricasso is stamped, Gesch Geschützt.
The original, choice condition, black leather blade washer is
in place. This is about as fine of a Red Cross hewer as you are
likely to encounter. Mint, Minus (26771) $1,195.00(#041808)

- RED CROSS HEWER - NO MAKER
This Red Cross
Hewer has outstanding nickel plated finish throughout. In fact,
this nickel plated finish is 100%. Even the fine edge of the pommel
top has full plating. The plating also has signs of some original
lacquer still protecting its surfaces. The cross guard features
and oval disc having a half-closed wing eagle which faces to the
viewers left. The bird clutches a cross in his talons and
has a vaulted mobile swastika on his breast. This hilt is as nice
as you will see. The grip plates are a black Bakelite variety.
The obverse plate is finely checkered and the reverse plate is
smooth. These plates are retained by screw and spanner hardware.
These fittings also still have all of their plating. The scabbard
shell is straight throughout and has excellent original paint.
This black paint shows a little bit of age crazing in the surfaces
here and there but, overall, the paint is still at 100% and retains
its original fine luster. The scabbard mounts are a matching nickel.
The lower mount is retained by two nickel side screws and the
upper example has two flatter style side screws. There is an outstanding
frog attached to the scabbard. This black frog has perfect leather
and it is in choice condition throughout, being retained by four
aluminum rivets. There is a capital K stamping on
the reverse of this frog at the belt loop area. The blade of this
example is also a beauty. This blade is nice and bright throughout,
having full 100% cross graining. It is equipped with a crisp sawback
spine and is in mint condition. There are some minor surface stains
which are just from old oil and would easily clean out with some
WD40 or the like. This blade, though, still remains in full mint
condition. The ricasso is stamped Ges. Gesch. The
new-like brown leather washer is still in place protecting this
fine blade. An outstanding example here, the likes of which would
be very difficult to upgrade. Mint Minus. $1,295.00
