PLAIN DRESS BAYONET SECTION

The K-98 dress bayonet was a dress version of the Combat style. It was worn by enlisted and NCO personnel. The bayonet was finished with a high-quality nickel plating, black checkered bakelite or genuine stag grip plates and black painted scabbard. The choice of blade length was left to the purchaser, being nickel-plated short or long version. There was a red or green colored felt insert in the rifle slot and the bayonet was suspended from a black or brown leather frog.

PLBAY - 001 -26742C - Plain Long Dress Bayonet by W.K.C.

The hilt of this Plain Long Dress Bayonet example still has nickel plated finish. It is beginning to thin on the edges. On the reverse pommel at about the center area, there is a small portion of the gray pot metal base that shows. It is not bad, though. The mortise and lock mechanism work well. The original red felt is still in the rifle slot. The grip plates are in good condition, being the black checkered variety. They are retained by nickel rivets, having dressed heads on the obverse. The scabbard is nice and straight throughout. It has good original black paint, showing a little bit of usage time, and some wear to the edges, but all in all, the paint appears to be about 90% to 95%. The blade of this example is the long style, having wide fuller construction. This blade is nice and bright throughout, having fine nickel plated finish. This blade is in near full mint condition. The obverse ricasso is stamped with the knighthead trademark, and beneath is the firm’s initials, “W.K.C.”. The original brown leather washer is in place. A fine overall bayonet, showing modest usage, but still in great collectable condition.
Excellent, Plus (26742-C) $195.00

PLBAY - 002 -26776 - Plain Long Dress Bayonet

The hilt fittings of this Dress Bayonet are in outstanding condition. The nickel plating is still bright, and covers at 100%. The grip plates are the standard black checkered variety. They are retained by brass rivets, having dressed heads on the obverse. The scabbard is straight throughout, having good original black paint. This paint shows a little bit of wear in the hand-hold positions, but overall, it still rates at about 95%. The blade of this example is the long style, having wide fuller construction. It is in choice bright nickel condition, and is mint. This blade is stamped on the reverse ricasso with the kissing cranes trademark. Below the birds is the firm’s name and location, “Robt Klaas, Solingen”. The original brown leather, new-like washer, is in place. A nice looking Plain Dress Bayonet here. Near Mint (26776) $225.00

PLBAY - 003 - PIONEER STYLE PLAIN LONG BAYONET

This Pioneer pattern has the blunted pommel and also the blunted quillon. It has really great nickel plating throughout, retaining its factory bright original condition. This plating is nearly 100%. The mortise slot does not have the felt, but the button works well. The grip plates are the bake-o-lite type, having excellent checkered pattern. They are in perfect condition and are retained by two nickel-plated brass rivets, the obverse having dressed heads. (Pack did not use the offset rivets on these Pioneer pieces. They probably did not make this design in house and, therefore, used the conventional style riveting). The long style blade is in choice condition having quality nickel-plated surfaces. It has the wide fuller construction and is in mint condition. The reverse ricasso has the small Siegfried hammering figure at the left, and a three-lined designation for the firm name and location, "E Pack & Söhne Solingen". The original blade leather washer is in place. The scabbard is straight throughout, however, the original paint is not very good. This paint is only about 50%. (This would be a good one to repaint, as the bayonet itself is a real beauty.) There is also a patent leather frog on this scabbard, but it is so attic heat-crazed, that it really has no value. This is a fine example for a scabbard re-paint and a new frog. Once this is done, it would be worth $100 more - still an excellent example.
Excellent Plus (20326) $295.00

PLBAY - 004 - 25958 - PLAIN SHORT DRESS BAYONET - WKC

This fine Dress Bayonet has excellent nickel plating to the hilt. In fact, these hilt fittings have 100% nickeling and the finish is still nice and bright. The mortise button and lock work fine. There is no felt in the rifle slot. The grip plates are the black checkered Bakelite type. It looks as though there possibly was a period repair to the obverse plate. It was done very cleverly and blended in a small piece of bake-o-lite at the upper center edge. The original checkering was redone and if you did not know it, it would be hard to tell that this was repaired. The reverse plate is in perfect condition. These plates are retained by nickel rivets having dressed heads on the obverse. The short style blade is the stepped variety having narrow fuller. This blade has outstanding nickel plated finish and it is still in mint condition. The obverse ricasso is stamped with the knight head symbol below, is the firm’s initials, “WKC”. The original black leather blade buffer is in place. The scabbard is also a fine example, having choice original black paint. This paint is in near full mint condition and really looks good. A nice bayonet here, and the period repair tends to add to the realistic historic perspective of the piece, if anything. Near Mint. $150.00

PLBAY - 005 - 25957 - PLAIN LONG BAYONET - PUMA

The nickel plating on the hilt of this bayonet example is still mostly all there and remains nice and bright. There is only a small spot on the reverse upper pommel where the plating is beginning to thin. The mortise button and lock work fine. The felt is missing from the rifle slot. The grip plates are in excellent, crisp condition, being the black Bakelite type. They are retained by nickel plated rivets having dressed obverse heads. The long style blade is the type with wide fuller. This blade has outstanding original nickel plating which remains in bright mint condition. The reverse ricasso is marked with the diamond trademark having the mountain lion head inside with the name beneath “Puma”. Underneath the diamond is the location of this firm “Solingen”. The original leather washer is in place. The scabbard is straight throughout. It has good original black paint, showing normal carrying signs. Overall, this paint is about 95%. There is a good original black patent leather frog. The frog is a high quality example, having a center-strengthening rivet in the reverse. This frog shows a little bit of attic crazing, but not bad. It is still very serviceable. This is a nice-conditioned bayonet.
Near Mint. $175.00

PLBAY - 006 - 26975 – PIONEER STYLE BAYONET – ANTON WINGEN

This Pioneer style Bayonet is an extremely rare format that is almost never seen. Most collectors know that the Pioneer style was available with the blunted eagle beak at the top and the blunted quillon at the bottom of the hilt. We do see these on occasion. If you look at your original catalogues though, you will also see that the firms offered a pioneer style with just the quillon blunted and the eagle’s beak still pointed. For some reason, very few people bought this variation and as a result, it is ultra-rare. This is one of those pieces and it is still in good, collectible condition. The pommel area has a good, sharp beak with working mortise lock. The quillon below, as indicated, is blunted and the plating, of course, goes all the way around the blunted area. (It is always good to examine these areas to make sure that it is not just a piece that has a broken quillon.) The original felt is missing from the rifle slot. This plating shows some minor freckling in the surfaces, but it is still all there. The grip plates are an early Bakelite variety, having good, close checkering. These plates are in perfect condition and they are retained by steel rivets having dressed heads on the obverse. The scabbard is straight throughout and has excellent original black paint. This paint shows some spidering in the surfaces and some usage signs but overall, it is still in good shape, rating at about 98%. The original patent leather black frog is also in place. This frog shows very little attic crazing and is still in excellent, serviceable condition, being the style having a rivet in the center reverse. The long style blade is the type with wide fuller construction. This blade has been nicely nickel plated and easily remains in a near mint condition. The reverse ricasso is stamped with the little knight trademark, and above him, is the firm’s name “Anton Wingen, Jr.” and below, the city of production “Solingen”. The black leather washer is in place. A very fine, rare example here. I am sure that this will fill a fine slot for someone out there collecting bayonets. Excellent Plus. $495.00

PLBAY - 007 - 26848 – PERSONALIZED PLAIN BAYONET WITH SWASTIKA IN GRIP - A. SEYSEN BAMBERG

This unusual bayonet was produced by the E. Pack & Company, but apparently was made for the distributor named on the reverse of the blade. The hilt of this example still is mostly bright, having good nickel plating. The nickeling is beginning to thin a little on the reverse center area of the quillon and also in the center area of the mortise lock. The mortise button itself works good. The reverse spine of this example has had its original owner’s name deeply scratched into the surfaces. It does not look like a professional job, but is still done quite well. The original owner’s name was “D.H. Kintner”. I don’t know if there is enough here for research, but the name is quite unusual and there shouldn’t be a lot of people with this same surname. The grip plates are the black checkered Bakelite type and they are in perfect condition. The plates are retained with spanner and rivet construction. It is also interesting to note that in the grip’s center area of the obverse there has been a round swastika symbol nicely placed in a cutout area. The swastika symbol has a white enamel field with silver round border and a mobile swastika in black enamel with silver bordering. This could have been done by the original owner, or he could have had it done locally by a craftsman. Either way, the insert looks absolutely period and gives quite a good look to this otherwise normal bayonet. The scabbard is straight throughout, being the short type. Its original paint is brighter in the area where there used to be a frog, and the area below shows quite a bit of age, at least on the obverse. On the reverse, the paint is in much better condition and is still nice and bright. I also just noticed, as I am dictating this description, that our former owner also cut his monogram into the reverse of the scabbard paint. In the center area neatly is “DHK” all done in capital letters. This NCO must have been concerned that somebody was going to take his bayonet and he wanted to make sure that he could identify it if they did. The blade is nice and bright and is a stepped variety having narrow fuller. This blade is beautifully nickel plated and is in full mint condition. The reverse ricasso is stamped with the distributor “A. Seysen/Bamberg”. The original new-like black leather blade washer is in place. An interesting bayonet here, which would be fun for a bayonet collector to add variation to his collection. Also a possible candidate here for further research. Excellent Plus. $495.00

PLBAY - 009 - 25913C - PLAIN SHORT DRESS BAYONET - ALCOSO

This plain Dress bayonet has excellent nickel plating to the hilt. This nickeling is near 100%, thinning only a little bit on the very edges of the pommel. It still retains its factory brightness. The mortise lock and button work well. The original felt is missing from the rifle slot. The black checkered Bakelite grip plates are in perfect condition and they are retained by nickel plated rivets having dressed heads on the obverse. The short blade is the stepped variety and it is still nice and bright. This blade would be in mint condition were there not just a few surface scratches, mostly on the reverse side. The blade is the stepped variety, having narrow fuller. The reverse ricasso is stamped with the 1937-39 Alcoso trademark. It features the scales having the firm’s initials “ACS” interspersed with the name of the firm in an arch over the scales, “Alcoso”. Beneath is the firm’s location “Solingen”. The leather blade washer has gone to time. The scabbard is nice and straight and has excellent original paint. This paint has some spidering in the surfaces, but it is all there and rates at about 99%. It is a little duller at the upper part where there once was a frog. A good collector example here for the beginner. Excellent Plus Plus. $95.00

PLBAY - 012 - 27103C - PLAIN SHORT BAYONET - E. & F. HÖRSTER

This Plain Bayonet example is not in good condition overall, but it is good for someone on a budget or someone just getting started. The hilt of this example has patination over the surfaces but the plating looks to be mostly intact beneath. There is some mild freckling in the surfaces, but not too bad. The mortise lock and button work well. The felt is missing from the rifle slot. The grip plates are in good condition throughout, remaining crisp and retained by steel rivets. The scabbard has a couple of minor dings in the obverse and also a couple in the reverse, and the lower ball also has been flattened as, apparently, this piece was dropped somewhere along the line. The scabbard paint is not too good, having quite a bit of crazing in the surfaces. Overall, this paint rates at about 50%. There is a good original frog still on this piece. The frog is of leather construction and is of black color. The blade is a short variety, having “stepped” construction. It has a narrow fuller. This blade has grayed over the surfaces, but it might brighten up with a little bit of Semi-Chrome. The obverse is stamped with this producer’s marking, which is a double oval circle. The oval contain the firm’s name and location “E. & F. Hörster Solingen”. Inside is the large “H” letter with the two smaller “h” and “s” letters having a sword piercing their center. The original blade washer is in place, although it is broken. This is a good starter piece. Good Only. $75.00

PLBAY - 013 - 25167 – Long Plain Bayonet by Puma

The hilt fittings of this Long Plain Bayonet are as nice as you will see. The plating is still very bright, and is perfect, but for the exception of one tiny spot, on the reverse. This does not show, however, and this plating really looks good. The mortise button and lock work well. The rifle slot has the original red felt, having one minor moth track in the surfaces. The grip plates are the black checkered type, and they are crisp and perfect. They are retained by nickel-plated rivets, having dressed heads on the obverse. The scabbard is nice and straight, and has excellent original black paint. This paint has the most minor of crazing in a couple of spots, but not enough to keep it from a mint rating. There is a good black patent leather frog. This frog has some attic crazing, but not much. It is still very serviceable. The long blade is the wide fuller construction. This blade is pristine mint throughout, having highest quality nickel-plating. The reverse ricasso is stamped with the mountain lion head and the firms name, “Puma”, within a diamond. Below the figure is the location of, “Solingen”. The, new-like, brown leather washer is in place. A fine bayonet here. Near Mint $225.00

PLBAY - 014 - LONG PLAIN BAYONET - Siegfried Waffen

This example has good nickel-plating to the hilt. It has not been cleaned in some time, and although there is a little age to some surfaces, it looks as though it could be cleaned to reveal nearly 100% plating. The mortise button works well, and the rifle slot is complete with the original green felt. The black bake-o-lite checkered grips are in perfect condition. They are retained with spanner and rivet hardware, which is installed slightly offset, typical of this producer. The long blade reflects fine quality nickel-plating. It is the wide-fuller variety, and is easily in mint condition. The reverse of the blade is etched with the Siegfried Waffen trademark, having the hammering figure below. To the figure's right, is the three line name and location of this producer, "E. Pack/ & Söhne/Solingen." The black leather blade buffer is in place. The scabbard is straight throughout. It has good original black paint, showing some mild crazing and a little usage, but it still rates at near 100%. The original black patent leather frog is affixed to the scabbard frog. It shows some attic heat crazing, but is still serviceable and is the type with quality rivet in the rear. Excellent Plus (20327) $175.00

PLBAY - 015 - STAG GRIPPED LONG PLAIN BAYONET BY ALCOSO

The hilt fittings of this bayonet have all of the nickel plating but there is some mild freckling evident in the surfaces. It is not too bad and hopefully will not lift further if proper storage is rendered. The original red felt is in the rifle slot having a little bit of mothing but not much. The grip plates are beautiful, genuine stag and they are masterfully fit. These stag surfaces have very appealing tan-ish brown grains with golden edges. These grip plates are retained with steel rivets, the obverse and reverse heads being dressed. The blade is a long type with wide fuller construction. It is in pristine condition having 100% nickeling to the surfaces and easily being in a full mint state. The reverse ricasso is stamped with the scales logo having the firm's initials "ACS" interspersed. Above the scales is the block lettered name of the firm, "Alcoso" and below, is the location of "Solingen". The brown leather washer is in place. The straight scabbard is a real beauty having 100% black paint. This original paint shows almost no age and remains in full mint condition. There is no frog.
Excellent Plus (20127) $250.00

PLBAY - 022 - STAG GRIPPED SHORT BAYONET - E. Pack and Söhne

This stag gripped Pack bayonet is very desirable and is quite rarely seen on the market place today. The hilt is uncleaned but it is easy to see that all the plating is there and that it will shine up to new-like condition should the next purchaser wish to do so. The fine nickel-plated upper hilt is equipped with a mortise button and lock and the original green felt is still in the rifle slot. This felt has not deteriorated at all. The grip plates are just short of magnificent. They were produced by a true master carver and fit the grip absolutely perfect. These grip plates have attractive brown and tan grains with lots of knobs being present in the graining of the reverse plate. The edges have turned a nice lighter golden color. These grip plates are retained by two nickel spanner and rivet hardware. The surfaces of the rivets still retain 100% plating. A great looking hilt here! The short style blade is the stepped type having narrow fuller. It is mirror bright having 100% nickel plating and being in full mint condition. The reverse ricasso is stamped with the Siegfried hammering small style figure. Below the legendary figure is the name and location of the producing firm, "E. Pack and Söhne, Solingen". The original leather washer is in place. The accompanying short scabbard is in excellent condition being straight and having near 100% painted finish. This paint still has good brightness and would clean to near mint. The accompanying frog shows some age but is not in bad condition, still retaining its original finish with some crazing. Attached to the frog is the original troddel. It is a tan silk strapping with tan lower ball. The slide and stem are worn down to the wood base, but there is still a little bit of the remaining material showing that the stem was at one time red and the slide probably matched the tan strapping. This would indicate that the bayonet was possibly carried by an artillery man. At any rate this is a very fine piece and should be very desirable. Near Mint (20678) $395.00

PLBAY - 023 - STAG GRIPPED SHORT BAYONET - NO MAKER (WKC)

This fine looking short bayonet has bright nickel-plated hilt which rates at 100%. It is nice and bright and still rates in mint condition. The mortise button works and there is red felt in the rifle slot which appears to be original to this piece. The grip plates are most beautiful having a dark brown and tan color graining. The areas where the expert craftsman trimmed these plates so long ago have now turned a golden color and contrast nicely with the dark grains. The craftsman also countersunk the areas in the stag where the rivets are positioned. Both heads of the rivets have been dressed. Fine looking hilt here! The short blade is the stepped type and as indicated it is unmarked. It is still nice and bright and shows a little bit of usage but still is very close to full mint condition. The original black leather blade washer is in place. The scabbard is nice and straight and has very fine original paint. This paint is near 100% and still has its factory luster. The lug is the "roach" style shape we associate with WKC production. There is no frog. This is a good-looking bayonet.Mint Minus (21765) $375.00

PLBAY - 026 - LONG PLAIN BAYONET - E. Pack and Söhne

This long bayonet has a fine nickel plated hilt. The hilt fittings show some usage signs, but the plating is all there, rating at 100%. The mortise button and lock work well. The felt is missing from the rifle slot. The grip plates are the black checkered variety bake-o-lite and they are in perfect condition. They are retained by rivet and spanner hardware. The heads of the obverse rivets also retain 100% plating. Good hilt here. The long blade is the style with wide fuller construction. It is bright having fine nickel plating throughout. The obverse is still in pristine condition. The reverse has a couple of hits in the area around the fuller but other than this, is also in mint condition. The reverse ricasso is stamped with the early small Siegfried hammering trademark. The figure is positioned over the name of the firm and the location, "E. Pack and Söhne Solingen". The original leather washer is in place. The scabbard is straight throughout having good original black paint. This paint shows some wearing signs but is still in good shape rating at about 97%. The reverse of the throat area shows a little flaking of the paint revealing pot metal base beneath. This is typical of Pack construction. Most Pack throats will be pot metal. A good sound collectible example here. Find a frog, a troddel and a piece of felt for the rifle slot and you will have a good complete collectible example. Excellent Plus (20636) $165.00

PLBAY - 048 - STAG GRIPPED SHORT BAYONET - E&F Hörster

The hilt section of this Bayonet still has mostly all of the nickel plating, but there is age freckling in the surfaces throughout. If the plating were shined up nice, though, it still would look very presentable. There is no felt in the rifle slot. The grip plates are quite beautiful being genuine stag. They were selected and cut by a master craftsman and they really look great. These grips are a matching pair, both having the same color deep browns and tans which appear in the raised grains. The edges are golden throughout. These grip plates are retained by nickel-plated steel rivets, the obverse heads being dressed. The straight scabbard has lots of unpleasant age to the paint. Unfortunately, this paint only rates at about 20%. (It would be an easy job, though, to repaint the scabbard and it would do a lot for this piece.) The repainting would be worth the effort as the short stepped edge blade is really a beauty. This blade reflects full factory mirror shine and has been highest quality nickel-plated. The blade has a narrow fuller. The obverse is stamped with the double circles of this firm. The oval circles trap the name and location, "E.u.F. Horster Solingen". Inside is the large, "H" with smaller "H" and "S" letters having a sword piercing them. The brown blade buffer is in place and has protected this fine example. A little work would make an extremely nice bayonet.
Excellent (23058) $275.00

PLBAY - 049 - LUFTWAFFE STAG GRIPPED BAYONET - Alcoso

The hilt fittings of this fine bayonet reflect 100% plating. This nickel plating looks very good showing some age in the surfaces, but it is very minor. This hilt would clean up to be an exceptional example. The felt is missing from the rifle slot. The mortise button does work excellent. The grips are produced of genuine stag. The stag is quite striking having good appealing grains with nice brown and tan colors running through. These grip plates were masterfully fit. The edges have turned a golden color from age. The grip plates are retained by two nickel-plated steel rivets having dressed heads on the obverse. The scabbard is also a fine example being straight throughout and having good original black paint. This paint rates at 100% and only shows the most modest signs of age. The scabbard is equipped with a choice quality brown frog. This frog is in near mint condition and is the type with rivet in the reverse, a good sign of quality. (The brown frog designates a Luftwaffe function.) The blade is a long style having wide fuller construction. This blade is a quality nickel-plated example and remains factory bright. It is in mint condition throughout. The reverse ricasso is stamped with the trademark used from 1937-1939. This consists of the scales having the firm's initials, "ACS" interspersed. Above the scales, the firm's name is block lettered, "Alcoso", in an arch, and below, is the manufacturing town, "Solingen". The blade has been buffered by an in-place brown leather washer. A very fine example.
Near Mint (23175) $395.00(#050508)

PLBAY - 053 - LUFTWAFFE STAG GRIPPED LONG BAYONET - WKC

The hilt fittings of this Bayonet are still bright having fine nickel plating. There is a little bit of freckling in the surfaces, but it does not effect the brightness or the good looks of this piece. The mortise button is a little sticky but still works, (it just needs a little oil). The original red felt is in the rifle slot showing minor age only. The grip plates are a beautiful stag antler. They are perfectly cut and installed by a master. They have golden tones mixed with the brown and tan grains. The edges have turned golden. These fine stag plates are retained by nickel rivets, the obverse heads being dressed. The scabbard of this example is straight throughout and has fine original black paint. This paint is still nearly all there failing only a little bit on the lower ball. It is bright and rates in near mint condition. There is also a fine brown frog which has markings on the back which would attribute it to the Luftwaffe. This frog is a K-98 type, but it does not have the rough finish seen on most. The frog is also maker-marked and dated, "1936". There are other stampings which appear on the back, but they are hard to make out. Fine looking frog here. The blade of this example is a long style, and it is extremely rare, in that it is the stepped-edge variety having narrow fuller. (Normally this type of blade is a short style and this is the first long style I remember seeing.) I suspect that this blade is of early vintage. The blade has the finest of nickel-plated surfaces and remains in factory bright condition. This blade is in full mint. The obverse ricasso is stamped with the knighthead trademark positioned over the firm's initials, "WKC". The original brown leather blade buffer is in place. This has to be a very collectible example here.
Near Mint (23159) $495.00

PLBAY - 059 - ARMY LONG DRESS BAYONET - Carl Eickhorn

The hilt fittings of this example reflect very good, totally intact plating. This piece has not been cleaned in some time, but I have no doubt that this nickel finish will polish up nice and bright to a near mint state. The mortise lock works fine in the pommel. The felt is missing from the rifle slot. The grip plates are good and crisp black bake-o-lite. They are retained by nickel plated steel rivets of which the plating has mostly worn off. The long style scabbard is straight throughout. The black paint on the reverse shows only nominal age and is mostly all there. The obverse paint shows slightly more age, but is still almost all there also. The scabbard is complete with its original frog. This black frog is a patent leather type which has some attic heat crazing, but it is not too bad and the frog is fully serviceable. There is a good troddel still tied to the frog. This Enlisted Man's Troddel consists of gray textured cotton strapping. There is a yellow textured cotton slide and a red stem. The lower ball has a yellow upper crown with gray bottom. The insert matches the strapping. This troddel shows usage and has just a little bit of fray around the top of the stem area but it is not bad. The long style blade is complete with a wide fuller. This blade reflects outstanding nickel plating and remains in mint condition. It is marked on the reverse being the 1935-41 stamped Eickhorn trademark. There is a dark brown leather blade buffer in place. A good complete original standard bayonet.
Excellent Plus, Plus (23787) $225.00

PLBAY - 060 - ARMY LONG DRESS BAYONET - E. Pack & Söhne

This Army Dress Bayonet is in an uncleaned state. Although the nickel hilt fittings have a dull patination across them I can see that they will easily clean up to a mint condition. The plating is all there and these fittings are still crisp throughout. The mortise lock works well. The original felt is missing from the rifle slot. The black checkered bake-o-lite grip plates are nice and crisp. They are retained by the offset spanner and rivet hardware we typcially see used by this company. The plating surface of the rivets also looks to be all there beneath the dirt. The long style scabbard is in perfect straight condition. It has good original black paint which does shows some minor age in the surfaces but it still remains at about 99%. I notice where a little bit if the paint is gone around the throat fitting, that it is the typical white metal material which Pack exclusively used on their scabbards. There is an original-to-the-piece black patent leather frog. This frog has quite a bit of attic heat crazing, but it is still in OK serviceable condition. The frog has a field gray felt backing, some of which has been eaten up by moths. (About 75-80% remains). Wrapped about the frog is what appears to be the original Enlisted Man's Troddel. This troddel is an off-white, textured silk fabric. The fabric is still good with no fraying, just showing a little period dirt. The slide is made of a red silk and the stem is a yellow silk. The lower ball has a red color yarn like cap, with off white yarn like bottom. The insert matches the silk strapping. A fine portepee here showing only a little age dirt and residue, but no fraying, and in otherwise good condition. The long style blade is a beauty. It is high quality throughout having outstanding mint nickel plating. It is a wide fuller design. This mint blade is stamped on the reverse ricasso with the early trademark used by this company. It consists of a small Siegfried hammering figure over the firm's name and location, "E. Pack and Söhne Solingen". The blade has been perfectly preserved by a fine brown color in-place leather washer. This is a good bayonet which will really clean up nice.
Near Mint (23786) $250.00

PLBAY - 061 - STAG GRIPPED ARMY SHORT BAYONET - F.W. Höller

This Army bayonet has good nickel-plated finish showing just the slightest of age in the surfaces. It will clean up very nicely, though, with a little bit of semi chrome. The mortise button still works good and there is the original red felt still in the rifle slot. It only has slight moth tracks. The stag grip plates are in excellent condition having nice shades of tan and brown in the raised grains. The edges are turning an antique gold color. These grip plates are retained by nickel plated steel rivets having dressed heads on the obverse. This is a good-looking extra cost hilt. The scabbard is straight throughout and it has excellent original black paint. This paint seems to still be covering 100% and really looks good being in near mint condition. There is also a very fine darker brown color patent leather frog. This frog is still in outstanding condition not having experienced the attic heat crazing that most of these go through. This frog shows only some minor age but really still looks great. The blade is the short stepped end variety having narrow groove. This blade reflects highest quality nickel-plated finish and is in mint condition. The obverse ricasso is stamped with the double ovals which trap the firm's name and location, "F.W. Höller Solingen". Inside is the familiar thermometer trademark. A nice stag gripped piece here in very livable condition.

PLBAY - 062 - 24430 - POSTAL PROTECTION LONG DRESS BAYONET - Paul Weyersberg

The Postal Protection Police was taken over by the SS in March of 1942. This fact makes Postal material somewhat more interesting than it would be if we did not know this. This Bayonet is identical to the example I show in my SS Book on page 574 through 576. The hilt of this piece has fairly good nickel plating, but it is beginning to wear thin at the sharp edges of the pommel top, and also around the mortise button. The plating also has a little bit of under-the-surface age, but not really any lifting. The grip plates are the black checkered bake-o-lite style. They are retained by nickel rivets having dressed heads on the obverse. The scabbard is straight throughout, and has fairly good original black paint. This paint shows some age and spidering in the surfaces, but overall, it is about 98%. The blade is the interesting part on this bayonet. It is a long style and has wide fuller construction. The blade is quality nickel plated and would be in mint condition except for a few in-and-out scratches here and there. The plating, though, is all there and remains factory bright throughout. The obverse ricasso is stamped, "DRP", and has the accountability number beneath, "4811". This stamping is the same as is shown on the example in my book except the book example has the accountability number and the property lettering positions reversed. The reverse ricasso has the ellipse trademark used exclusively on these pieces. No doubt Weyersberg was given a contract to make a number of these bayonets for the German Postal Protection system. The ellipse contains the firm's name and location around its perimeters, "Paul Weyersberg and Company Solingen". The original leather blade washer is in place. A good original example of a Postal Protection bayonet. This bayonet is reasonably priced.
