MEDALS & BADGES -- Part IV

MEDALS - 269 - 25038 – Waffen-SS/Army Infantry Badge

This Army Infantry badge is a beauty having much of the original silvered finish still intact over the gray metal base. The badge consists of an oval oak leaf wreath, which is open in the center. Perched atop, is a Wehrmacht closed-winged eagle, which looks to the viewer’s right, and clutches a mobile swastika. This bird has outstanding detail. Crossed over the wreath area, diagonally, is a K-98 rifle, complete with sling and fixed bayonet. The silvering throughout this badge looks to still be about 80% to 85%. The reverse of the badge has a hinged straight pin, with cup catch. This badge is marked in a circle on the reverse with the maker mark, “GWL”. A very fine example. Near Mint $165.00

MEDALS - 270 - 26896 - IRON CROSS FIRST CLASS

This First Class Iron Cross shows a little bit of mild usage, but the silvering and serrations are still in nice condition. The dark black finish is also still good throughout, showing some minor age, but still appearing to be intact. There is one small area at the left leg lower corner where the blackening appears to be thinning. There is a good, vaulted mobile swastika in the center with a fine, vaulted date of “1939" at the lower leg. On the reverse, the hinge is slightly different than we normally see. It is a barrel style which is mounted to a shield shape base. The pin itself is the coke bottle style with cup hook. This coke bottle pin is stamped “L52". I believe that this is quite a rare stamping to see and, also, the format of the hinge device is a rare method use. For those out there collecting Iron Cross types, this should be a good one. Excellent Plus. $695.00

MEDALS - 271 - 26897 - IRON CROSS FIRST CLASS

This Iron Cross First Class has a nice patination throughout its silvered surfaces. The serrations are still crisp and the dark areas have nearly 100% of the original finish. There is just a slight failing at the serration edge of the nine o’clock leg, but it is nothing. The swastika in the center area is highly vaulted on this example, as is the date at the lower leg “1939". The reverse of the cross also has fairly nice patinated surfaces. The barrel hinge is the double strength type and there is a coke bottle shaped pin with cup hook at the end. The pin is stamped “65". A fine example here, and very good looking. Excellent Plus Plus. $550.00

MEDALS - 272 - 26895 - IRON CROSS FIRST CLASS

This Iron Cross First Class still has good, bright silvering to the edges of its legs, and the serrations are crisp. The original dark finish appears to still be 100% throughout and the center swastika has a good vaulted appearance. The “1939" date on the lower leg is also crisp. The reverse of the badge has the double style barrel hinge with a coke bottle shaped pin and cup hook. I do not see any maker markings on this badge. The reverse of the badge also has good patination. A fine example to display with some other memorabilia. Near Mint. $495.00

MEDALS - 273 - 26898 - U-BOAT BADGE

This U-Boat badge is in the later zinc base metal. The gilting is fairly light, spread across the obverse surfaces, and looks to remain at approximately 20% - 30%. The depiction is an ellipse shape with overlapping laurel leaves which run around the surfaces. In the top area, there is a Naval style winged eagle with open wings clutching a mobile swastika. The bird looks to the viewer’s left and has good detail to the breast area. In the center of the ellipse is a fine U-Boat depiction. All of the details are outstanding, to include even the rudder and propellor. The reverse of the badge has more of the original gilt than the obverse. The gilding here looks to be at about 60% - 70%. There is a barrel style hinge which runs vertically with a rather odd shaped pin. It is wider on the ends and thinner in the middle. There is a cup style hook. The pin is stamped with the maker mark “L21". I believe this is a fairly rare maker mark, as I do not remember seeing it in the past. A good, authentic badge here that you can display with other Naval stuff. Excellent. $495.00

MEDALS - 274 - 26812 - BOXED LUFTWAFFE GENERAL ASSAULT BADGE

The box for this General Assault badge is a tan color and it measures approximately 2 inches wide by 2¾ inches in length. The box has a dark brown lined design motif. The original tissue paper is at the bottom of the box. Inside is the original Luftwaffe General Assault badge. This badge is of two-piece construction. It features an ovaled wreath of overlapping oak leaves. At the top is a silvered Luftwaffe eagle which flies to the viewer’s right and clutches a mobile swastika. The details to this eagle are outstanding throughout and it is also riveted to the badge portion below. The portion below consists of gray color storm clouds through which is a thundering lightning bolt with arrow at the end. This arrow goes down to the simulated ground which is featured at the bottom of the badge. The badge itself has nearly all of the original silvering and the gray contrasting colors. The reverse of the badge is maker marked “RH Osang, Dresden”. There is a barrel style hinge with straight type pin and cup hook. The reverse of the badge also has silvered and gray areas. A very fine example here, which has faired well over the years because of its enclosure within its original box. The original tissue paper is also at the bottom of the box acting as a liner. Near Mint. $650.00

MEDALS - 275 - 26864 - BRONZE MOTHER’S CROSS WITH RIBBON

This Mother’s Cross is an outstanding example, having perfect enamel to the blue, white and gold bordered legs. In the center is a round medallion device which features a white field with black immobile swastika. The enameling to this area is also still perfect. Around the field is the purpose of the medal raised out “Der Deutschen Mutter”. In the center of the cross are flared bronzed areas. The reverse of the cross has the date of inception “16.Dezember 1938" and a facsimile signature of Adolf Hitler. Attached to the medal is the original blue ribbon with white and blue striped lines on the edges. It is a fairly good length and could be worn around the neck. The ends are kept together via a snap device which still works. A nice Mother’s Cross here. Excellent Plus. $75.00

MEDALS - 276 - 26876 - NEXT OF KIN SILVER SPANISH CROSS AND MOTHER’S CROSS RIBBON BAR/MEDAL

This Parade medal ribbon bar is really good looking and, I thought, irresistible when I bought it. The ribbon bar has two medals and their corresponding ribbons. The first medal is a miniature sized silver Spanish flyer’s cross. The cross has fine Luftwaffe eagles with swastikas mounted between each leg. In the center, there is a vaulted swastika within a bordered circle. As we like to see on these medals, the swastika is vaulted out higher than the circles around it. The details to the four Luftwaffe eagles are also quite nice. I do not see any markings on the back of this cross. Next to the cross is a bronze Mother’s Cross. This cross has good enameling throughout the blue, white and gold bordered legs. In the center is an enamel white round field and a black immobile swastika. There are a few scratches over the field and swastika area, but I don’t see any missing enamel. Around the white field is a bronze rim which has the purpose of the cross “Der Deutschen Mutter”. The reverse of the cross has the date “16.Dezember 1938" and a facsimile of Hitler’s signature. The ribbons behind these medals for the Spanish Cross are black with white, red, gold and red striped edge lines, and a blue, white, blue, white ribbon for the Mother’s Cross. The reverse of this parade medal has a red wool liner with a straight pin. It is my understanding that this medal bar would have been worn by the mother of a Luftwaffe pilot killed during the Spanish Civil War campaign. This is a rarely seen medal and is 100% genuine.Excellent Plus Plus. $1,195.00

MEDALS - 282 - 26813 - EARLY WAFFEN-SS/ARMY INFANTRY ASSAULT BADGE

This Infantry Assault badge appears to be fairly early, as it has a faulted appearance, nice detail and a silver look to it. The badge is of an oval design having highly detailed, overlapping oak leaves with acorns. Even the cap checkering of the acorns can be seen, along with good detail to the leaves’ veins. At the top is a Wehrmacht style closed-winged eagle which looks to the viewer’s right. This bird is clutching a mobile swastika in its talons. Laying across the wreath at a 45 degree angle is a K-98 Mauser rifle with sling. All of the details can be seen to this rifle and also to the bayonet which is affixed to the end and goes outward from the wreath. At the lower side, the stock also is positioned outward from the wreath of the badge. The reverse is marked with three circles, one above the two others, which are next to each other. In the circles are the letters “FLL”. There is a pin which is mounted on a barrel hinge. The pin is straight throughout and attaches to a cup hook with pedestal. A nice looking example here. Near Mint. $250.00

MEDALS - 283 - 26859 - 2ND CLASS BRONZE WAR MERIT CROSS WITH SWORDS AND RIBBON

This 2nd Class War Merit Cross is one of the early strikes, having a rich, bronze finish. It consists of a Maltese style cross having stippling to all of the legs. In the center is a round wreath which contains a raised out mobile swastika. Roman-like swords pierce the center areas. The reverse is the same, except the date “1939" replaces the swastika in the center. There is a loop at the top to which a ribbon would be placed through. In this case, the ribbon accompanies the badge, but has never been threaded through the loop. This ribbon still remains in choice condition. It is a textured satin having a black stripe in the center with stripes of white and red which run out on both edges. This example appears to have been in a packet and probably never issued. If you have an extra packet, it would fit good with this medal. Mint. $65.00

MEDALS - 285 - 25035 – Cloth Embroidered Luftwaffe Observer Badge

This Observer’s badge is the cloth version. It has a base of Luftwaffe gray wool, to which is embroidered in white thread, the image of the Observer badge. It features an oval of overlapping oak leaves, with a large eagle coming in for a landing, clutching an open mobile swastika. The details to the stitching are outstanding. The badge is still nice and clean, and in pristine condition. The reverse has a black paper covering, which is 100% intact. A beautiful cloth badge here.Mint $450.00

MEDALS - 286 - 25037 – 25 Year Faithful Service Cross with Ribbon

This 25 Year Service Cross consists of a silvered Maltese cross badge, having borders running around the legs of the cross, with all legs having pebbled centers. In the center of the cross is an immobile swastika, made of black enamel. The enamel is perfect. Within the legs of each cross is a wreath of oak leaves. The reverse of the cross, in the center, has the purpose of the award, which in English is, “For Loyal Service”. There is a blue ribbed ribbon, which is attached to the medal’s loop. This medal has a nice patination over the silvered finish.Excellent, Plus $65.00

MEDALS - 289 - 25024 – Cased Gilded 40-yr Service Cross with Ribbon

The case of this 40-year Service Cross is a fine, red leatherette. It is in good shape throughout, showing very little age. Embossed into the top surface is a rounded wreath of oak leaves with the number, “40” in the center. The inside lid of the case is a white satin, and has the maker’s name in black embossed in the lower corner, “Deschler & Sohn/MÜnchen”. Most collectors will recognize this company as the one who also made the coveted Golden Party Badge. The inside of the case has a purple color velvet, which is split in the center to position the loop section of the medal. The medal itself is a gilded Maltese-style Cross, having smooth borders around the legs, and pebbled surfaces within the legs. There is a wreath, which runs between each leg, being overlapping oak leaves. In the center is an immobile black enameled swastika. The gilding and the swastika are in perfect condition. The reverse has the same motif, except in a center box is the purpose of the award, which in English says, “For Loyal Service”. The blue ribbed satin ribbon is attached, and has a pin at the reverse upper area. This is a nice looking item here, and would display well with other artifacts.Near Mint $250.00

MEDALS - 290 - 25023 – Cased Gold Mother’s Cross

This case of the Mother’s Cross is a dark blue leatherette. It shows some signs of age, having a few scuffs here and there, but overall it is still in good shape. The center area has an embossed replica of the medal in gold. The inside lid is a padded silk having, the maker’s name at the bottom in black. It is marked, “R.Houschild, Pforzheim”. The inside area is an off-white velvet, which is split in the middle to accommodate the ribbon. The medal is a beautiful enameled cross, having the lower leg being longer than the three upper examples. The cross exhibits a blue enameled center, with white border. These colors are separated by gilded narrow borderlines. In the center of the medal is a sunburst style backing, with a round medallion, exhibiting an immobile black swastika on white enamel field. There is a golden border around the field, which has the purpose of the medal, which in English is, “The German Mother”. Attached to the medal is the original blue and white stripped, ribbed satin, ribbon. This ribbon is the long type and would have been worn around the neck. The reverse of the medal is engraved with the inception date of, “16 Dezember 1938”. Below this, is a facsimile of Adolph Hitler’s signature. This medal was awarded for German mothers, who bore eight or more children. Quite an accomplishment! Excellent, Plus $250.00

The case for this example is a black leatherette having a borderline around the obverse lid. There is a steel style push button for opening. The inside lid is lined in a padded white satin. The bottom case is cut out to receive the medal and is finished in a black velvet with a white border piece. The award itself is a very good looking cross design. The cross has a center insignia of a mobile swastika on a white background. Each straight leg of the cross is finished in white enamel and has a red flame encompassing its length and the flame is enhanced with silver borders. In between each leg is a plain silver style wreath having raised lettering on each section. The lettering designates the fact that the award is for service in the fire department. There is a ring at the top and there is also a ribbed ribbon which is still folded and has never been affixed to the award. This fine ribbon is white in the center and has an orange line on each side with an edge border having a darker orange color. A very beautiful combination here and a great item to display with your saw back bayonet or perhaps your fire official's dirk. A beautiful award and rarely seen.

MEDALS - 382 - WAFFEN SS / ARMY INFANTRY ASSAULT BADGE

This infantry assault badge is one of the later zinc types which has signs of once having a silvered finish. The silvering is about ten percent throughout the recesses of the badge. The badge displays an ovaled wreath of overlapping oak leaves. At the top is a Wehrmacht eagle with closed wings clutching a mobile swastika. Across the diagonal of the oak leaf oval is a well detailed K-98 rifle equipped with sling and bayonet. Excellent detail throughout this badge. The reverse has a straight pin style catch.

MEDALS - 387 - SS EIGHT YEAR SERVICE MEDAL WITH RIBBON

This medallion is in the shape of approximately a silver dollar size and it is a bronze strike. It is very crisp throughout and the obverse features an immoblie swastika which has a wreath superimposed over its center and a set of SS runes raised out. A very effective decoration here! The reverse of the award has the number, "8" in the background and superimposed over the number is, "FÜR / TREUE DIENSTE / IN DER / SS RUNES". This, of course, means, "For true service in the SS for eight years". Attached to the upper ovaled ring is a blue ribbed satin ribbon. This is a fine original example in choice condition.
