MEDALS AND BADGES SECTION - PART III

MEDALS - 186 - 26097 - Old Fighter’s Medallion

This Old Fighter’s Medallion is about 2 ¼ inches in diameter. It appears to be made of perhaps a silvered zinc base. It has a Political style, half-open-winged eagle, which clutches a wreathed mobile swastika. The bird looks to the viewer’s right, and is nicely detailed. Around the bird is the writing, “15 Jahre kampf um Ingolstadt dem alten Kämpfer”. This, to me, seems to signify that there was a 15 year meeting of the Old Fighter’s from the Party held in Ingolstadt. The reverse of the medallion has the raised-out, 6-line inscription, “Zer Errinerung/an/15. Jahresfeier/gewidmet von der/stadt Ingolstadt/11.12.1937”. Again, this hints at the same thing, indicating it is a gift of the remembrance of the 15 year reunion held in the city of Ingolstadt, on the Dezember 11, 1937. I have never seen one of these before, and can’t find it in any books. I am making a guess at its value. Excellent Plus (26097) $195.00

MEDALS - 187 - 26359C - Medallion Commemorating Imperial Pilot Oswald Boelcke

This impressive medallion is about 3 ½ inches in diameter. It appears to have been struck in bronze. The obverse has a raised bust of a profile of the great Imperial flyer, Oswald Boelcke. The details to his face are excellent, and this is a fine image of the man. He wears his Imperial tunic, and it is easy to see the Blue Max medal hanging from the throat area. Around the perimeter is the raised-out wording, “Oswald Boelcke 28.Oktober.1916”. There are Iron Crosses, which separate the man’s name, from his date of death. The image was apparently designed by the man’s name, which appears beneath the bust, “K.Goetz”. On the reverse, there is an Imperial single-winged airplane, complete with an Iron Cross under the wing, and above it, an eagle flying, and also an angel superimposed over the airplane. Around the perimeter of the medallion are the words, “Kampf. in. den Lvften”. I assume that these were words that designated the death of the fighter. The detail throughout this depiction is also outstanding. This would be a great medallion to display with other World War 1 aircraft memorabilia. As most people know, Boelcke was very famous, and was one of the original German flyers to make good during World War 1. He, of course, won the Blue Max, and at the time he won it, I believe a pilot only needed 15 confirmed kills, which later was raised to 21. A fine item here which is relatively rare.Excellent, Plus (26359-C) $495.00

MEDALS - 192 - 26579C - Cased West Wall Medal

The case of this West Wall Medal is in new-like condition. It is a fine tan color leatherette. On the lid is embossed in gold the name of the medal, “Deutsches/Schutzwall/Ehrenzeichen”. The case opens by pushing a brass plated steel push-button. The inner lid is a padded satin. The original ribbon has not been put on the medal, and it is held in place by a sash across the inner lid. The bottom base of the case has a brown velvet, which is cut out to accept the West Wall medal. The medal is a choice bronze example, which pictures an open eagle with swastika over a crossed shovel and sword, and a depiction of the West Wall beneath. The reverse of the oval medallion has the German slogan for work on the German wall. This medallion is in choice new-like condition. A fine display item here.

MEDALS - 194 - 26425 - Early Luftwaffe Flak Badge

This Flak Badge is a real beauty, having a great black patination across the silvered surfaces. The badge consists of an oval wreath of overlapping oak leaves, which is open in the middle. Atop the wreath is a highly detailed Luftwaffe eagle, which flies to the viewer’s right. This bird carries a mobile swastika, with pierced legs. The detail to the feathering, eye, and beak area is exceptional. Below, on the base of the wreath, is mounted an “88” gun, with its barrel piercing the wreath, at about the 50 degree, 2 o’clock angle. The “88” cannon is also a beauty, showing full details throughout. This is an exceptional early medal. The reverse has a barrel catch, with a straight pin. The pin has a few bends in, it where it was originally on a uniform. The badge is marked on the reverse, “Brehmer Markneu Kirchen”. An outstanding example, to put with a good looking Luftwaffe dagger or other relic.Near Mint (26425) $895.00

The eagle has beautiful detail to his talons, wing feathering, breast feathering, eye, and sharp beak. This example shows little to no wear. It is identical to the piece that is shown in the Niemann book. The reverse of the medal is marked in a tiny stamping, “C.E.Juncker Berlin SW”. Near Mint (26415-C) $1,595.00

The badge is made up of an oval design, half of which is formed of overlapping oak leaves, and the other half from overlapping laurel leaves. At the bottom of the wreath is a mobile swastika. Positioned over the wreath, and held by rivets, is a diving eagle. The detail to this bird, throughout the feathering, claws, beak, and head, is phenomenal. The reverse of the pin has the rivets with small raised heads. The hinge is a barrel style, with straight pin and cup hook. The eagle is marked on the reverse with the producer, “W.Deumer Ludenscheid”. A beautiful original badge here.
Near Mint (26419-C) $750.00

MEDALS - 201 - 26411C - SA Defense Badge for War Disabled

This SA Badge looks a lot like the standard Sports Badge, but it is also much different. It is in a bronze color, and is in the configuration of an oval formed by a wreath of overlapping oak leaves. At the bottom of the oak leaves is a rune symbol, the type used by the Feldherrnhalle. Beneath the rune is a Roman-style broad sword grip, with a blade which points upward, through the open area of the center wreath. Behind the blade is a lined mobile swastika, with pebbling to the surface. This is a rarely seen badge, and it is in good condition. It is a nearly round circle, which is formed by overlapping oak leaves. The circle is open in the center. Laying over the center is a Roman broad sword, and beneath this is a mobile swastika. The details are excellent throughout this badge, and it shows little wear. On the reverse, the number ”7220” is stamped into one side of the wreaths. There is also the wording, “ Eigentum d. Chefs”. The center is open, and has a Roman-style sword, which has the grip end at the bottom, with the blade pointing upward through the badge. Beneath the sword is a mobile style swastika. There is a pair of twin crossed swords, and superimposed over these, is an early Frankenstein-style helmet having a raised-out swastika in the center. The helmet has good detail, and you can see the rivets in the side. Some of the silvering has worn from the high legs of the swastika, as this in a vaulted position on the badge. This Army Infantry badge is a beauty having much of the original silvered finish still intact over the gray metal base. The badge consists of an oval oak leaf wreath, which is open in the center. Perched atop, is a Wehrmacht closed-winged eagle, which looks to the viewer’s right, and clutches a mobile swastika. This bird has outstanding detail. MEDALS - 216 - 24836 - Cased Imperial First Class Iron Cross

This Iron Cross case is a fine black leatherette having rounded corners. The leatherette shows some mild age, but there are no wear spots in the fabric. The border is also line decorated. Inside the center area of the lid, the Cross image is embossed in gold. Usually, these will be silver. I understand when the embossing is in gold, the Cross was personally given by the Kaiser. The flap, when opened, has a padded, off-white silk liner. The silk has taken on the silhouette of the Iron Cross. The beautiful bottom of the case is a high pile purple velvet with the slot left for the reverse pin. The Cross itself is nicely patinated throughout. It still has crisp serrations and good sharp lines. The center area has perfect black paint. It portrays a Prussian crown at the top, a “W” in the center, and the 1914 date at the lower leg. The reverse of the pin is also impressively silvered and it is stamped in the center with the marking “800CD“. This indicates that this Cross is a high quality silver example, which we would expect. A very fine piece here and a great display item.
Excellent Plus, Plus $695.00

MEDALS - 217 - 24876 - Cased Imperial First Class Iron Cross

The case of this example has rounded corners and is covered with black leatherette. The leatherette is still in fine condition throughout. Embossed into the top of the case is a facsimile of a gold-colored Iron Cross. It is my understanding the gold coloring meant that the Kaiser himself presented the award. The lid opens to reveal a plush white satin with padding behind. The satin has a silhouette of the Iron Cross pressed into its surfaces. The bottom of the open case reveals a beautiful royal purple velvet color having a slot to accommodate the pin of the Cross. The Cross itself is a bright silver example which shows little patination. The serrations are still nice and crisp and the black center areas are perfect. The Cross presents the Prussian crown at the top leg and the date, “1914” at the bottom leg. The letter “W”, for Wilhelm, appears raised out in the center. The reverse of the Cross is also brightly silver finished. The pin is a tapered type. Just below the catch are the makers initials “KO”. This is a very beautiful example and of highest quality. Very desirable!
Excellent Plus, Plus $695.00

MEDALS - 218 - 24920 - Silver Wound Badge with Titled Packet

The packet of this Wound Badge example is the off-white manila type. It shows some age and wear, but there are no tears or any problems. The packet is titled “Berwundeten-/Abzeichen/Silber”. This, of course, translates to Silver Wound Badge. There is also old ink writing on the upper portion of the badge indicating it is a Silver Wound example. This was done probably years ago, but since it is in English, must have been done by a collector. The badge itself is the solid zinc type. It still has silvering which covers about 2/3’s of the outer border, and it is also evident on the raised-out swastika as well as on the grips of both of the swords. This silvering rates at about 30% to 40% . The badge consists of an oval wreath bordered by overlapping oak leaves. The center area is pebbled and depicts a raised-out helmet with super-imposed swastika positioned over crossed swords. The reverse has a plain pin which still reflects the silvering. The badge is not marked. A nice example. Excellent Plus $150.00

The badge is still nice and clean, and in pristine condition. The reverse has a black paper covering, which is 100% intact. A beautiful cloth badge here. Mint $450.00

MEDALS - 223 - HORSEMAN’S BRONZE BADGE

This Bronze Horseman’s Badge is an early strike having very fine detail. It consists of an ovalled circle having raised out oak leaves. At the bottom is a large letter “R.” This stands for the German word for rider being, “Reiter.” The center of the badge is pierced and it features a mounted horseman. The reverse of this badge is maker marked with the name, “Chrs. Lauer Nurmberg/Berlin.” These badges are not all that common and this is nice one.

Excellent Plus (22814) $65.00

MEDALS - 226 - DOCTOR FRITZ TODT SILVER MEDAL WITH MINIATURE STICK PIN FOR LAPEL

This set of the medal and lapel stick pin are very impressive. The medal is a fairly large, heavy item measuring about 2 ½-inches by approximately 1 ¾-inches. It features a large Party type eagle with half open wings, resting over a box with the raised out name, "Doctor Fritz Todt". The box is positioned over a gear wheel which is vaulted out of a cog wheel design. This depiction is very, very impressive. The reverse has a fairly large pin which is a tapered flat type with barrel fitting and a cup device which keeps it closed. The pin runs the entire length of this large medal. It is quite heavy and therefore, I could see why it would need this long pin. The stick pin which comes with it is an exact duplicate in every way. It is fitted to a stick pin which has a serrated body so that it would not come loose from the wearer's lapel. These awards are quite rare and this is the first set that I have had the pleasure to offer.
Near Mint (23181) $850.00

MEDALS - 227 - 25024 – Cased Gilded 40-yr Service Cross with Ribbon

The case of this 40-year Service Cross is a fine, red leatherette. It is in good shape throughout, showing very little age. Embossed into the top surface is a rounded wreath of oak leaves with the number, “40” in the center. The inside lid of the case is a white satin, and has the maker’s name in black embossed in the lower corner, “Deschler & Sohn/MÜnchen”. Most collectors will recognize this company as the one who also made the coveted Golden Party Badge. The inside of the case has a purple color velvet, which is split in the center to position the loop section of the medal. The medal itself is a gilded Maltese-style Cross, having smooth borders around the legs, and pebbled surfaces within the legs. There is a wreath, which runs between each leg, being overlapping oak leaves. In the center is an immobile black enameled swastika. The gilding and the swastika are in perfect condition. The reverse has the same motif, except in a center box is the purpose of the award, which in English says, “For Loyal Service”. The blue ribbed satin ribbon is attached, and has a pin at the reverse upper area. This is a nice looking item here, and would display well with other artifacts. Near Mint $250.00

MEDALS - 228 - 25023 – Cased Gold Mother’s Cross

This case of the Mother’s Cross is a dark blue leatherette. It shows some signs of age, having a few scuffs here and there, but overall it is still in good shape. The center area has an embossed replica of the medal in gold. The inside lid is a padded silk having, the maker’s name at the bottom in black. It is marked, “R.Houschild, Pforzheim”. The inside area is an off-white velvet, which is split in the middle to accommodate the ribbon. The medal is a beautiful enameled cross, having the lower leg being longer than the three upper examples. The cross exhibits a blue enameled center, with white border. These colors are separated by gilded narrow borderlines. In the center of the medal is a sunburst style backing, with a round medallion, exhibiting an immobile black swastika on white enamel field. There is a golden border around the field, which has the purpose of the medal, which in English is, “The German Mother”. Attached to the medal is the original blue and white stripped, ribbed satin, ribbon. This ribbon is the long type and would have been worn around the neck. The reverse of the medal is engraved with the inception date of, “16 Dezember 1938”. Below this, is a facsimile of Adolph Hitler’s signature. This medal was awarded for German mothers, who bore eight or more children. Quite an accomplishment!
Excellent, Plus $250.00

MEDALS - 237 - 25770 – Later Destroyer Badge

This Destroyer Badge appears to be the later zinc-base type. It features an ovaled wreath of overlapping oak leaves, with a Wehrmacht closed-winged eagle and swastika at the top. The center is open, and at the lower portion, there is a destroyer, which is crashing over breaking waves. There is lots of detail to the destroyer’s superstructure, where you can see some portholes, guns, the ensign, and the anchor attached at the bow. Most of the finish remains on this badge. On the reverse, there is a small hook for attachment to the uniform at the top. Horizontally, across the badge is a barrel hinge, and straight pin with cup hook. Beneath the pin is the raised out maker initials, “S.H.u.Co.”. A good original badge here, that is later made, but is original and priced accordingly. Excellent $325.00

The reverse of the medallion has a number “8”, vaulted outward, and superimposed over the number is the purpose of the medal in four lines in capital letters, “Für/treue dienste/in der/SS”. Obviously, this means for 8 years of service in the SS. Attached to the oblong shaped loop at the top, is a blue satin ribbon. Attached to a loop at the top of the medal is a satin looped ribbon. This ribbon is brown in the center, having two white lines on each side. Looking to the Führer’s right is a raised-out bust of a Wehrmacht soldier, and to the left is a bust of a SA/SS man wearing a kepi. There is a fine raised-out mobile swastika in the center, and at the lower leg of the Cross is the date raised out, “1939”. The reverse of the Cross is also deeply patinated, with the exception of the inner center areas, which still show some silver frosting. There is a barrel hinge with cup hook catch, and the pin is a coke bottle shape. This pin is stamped, “15” on the reverse side. A very fine Iron Cross here. Near Mint $595.00

MEDALS - 251 - 25708 – Late Parachute Badge

This Parachute Badge is of zinc construction, and it is a wartime late made example. The details throughout, though, are extremely crisp and this badge appears to possibly have been unissued. The badge consists of an oval wreath, which half is composed of overlapping oak leaves, and the other half composed of laurel wreathing. The oval is open in the center. Crossing on a 45 degree dive angle is an eagle, which clutches an open swastika in his talons. The detail to the bird, head, feathering, and other features is outstanding. The reverse of the badge has a barrel hinge, with straight pin and catch. The rivets which retain the diving bird are the style which are not dressed on the back. (This is typical of the late issue pieces). This badge is unmarked. A fine original example here. Mint, Minus $595.00

The push button and hinge assembly are magnetic. The inner lid opens up to a padded white silk fabric. It is marked at the bottom with the maker and town, "Deschler and Sohn / München". In the bottom of the case it is covered with a deep purple velvet having a split portion so there is something to catch the medal separating it from the ribbon. The medal is a beautiful gold Maltese cross with a wreath between the cross legs, and an immobile black enamel swastika in the center. The reverse is the same, except the swastika is replaced with the three line slogan, "Für / Treue / Dienste". The original blue lined satin ribbon is complete with a brass style pin.
