COMBAT BAYONETS AND FIGHTING KNIVES - 3RD REICH

The K-98 rifle was the mainstay of the German soldier. The bayonet designed for attachment to this rifle was completed in a blued finish. Usually the pommel and mortise button had proof markings. The grip plates were originally made of wood, but after the war began, this became a dark bakelite material, and lastly a reddish ersatz material. The matching scabbard was numbered to match the blade stamping. Fighting knives were carried by many combat soldiers. These knives generally had wood grip plates with single edge. The scabbards were usually black painted tube steel with belt loops of spring steel.

FK3 - 005 - 27154 - LUFTWAFFE FIGHTING KNIFE - NO MAKER

This Fighting Knife looks like the standard Third Reich boot knives with the exception that the wood plates have larger rivets than is normally seen. The scabbard leather is also a little different on this piece, but the blade seems to be the same as the common examples. I suspect that it is just a smaller producer who did not make many of these pieces for the German Wehrmacht. This example has the standard oak grip plates. These grip plates are shaped in a hand hold and have good, smooth surfaces with fine graining. These grip plates are retained by three large rivets which are flush mount, just like the ones that we see on the conventional boot knives. The reverse rivet heads are smaller and are also flush with the wood. The quillon is the conventional type, having two short quillon ends which are both rounded. The scabbard is a standard tube steel variety. It has good original black paint which is nearly 100%. There is a brown leather belt loop and retainer loop combination. It is slightly different from the norm in that usually we see alligator clips on these pieces. Nevertheless, the leather is in good, serviceable condition and the retainer loop has a good working snap. The blade is the typical type, having single edge with a return edge at the top which comes to about the half-way point. There is a short ricasso and the blade has a spine to the point where the return blade begins. This blade looks as though it has been cleaned up with a wire brush tool but, nevertheless, it has no blemishes, pits or problems and is still quite bright. The Luftwaffe stamping is a typical later period stick bird having the number “5" stamped into his belly. I may be wrong about the wire brush cleaning up, as this Luftwaffe stamping still appears completely crisp. It may be that this was just the way this company finished their blade surfaces. All in all, a good, strong example here showing usage of the time and in good, collectible condition. Excellent Plus Plus. $250.00

FK3 - 006 - 27232 - UTILITY WOOD GRIPPED JACK KNIFE

This Jack Knife appears to have been of German issue and maybe was captured by an American GI. The jack knife is a little over 4.5 inches in length with a blade of 4 inches. The body of the knife features oak wood plates which look the same as the material used for Gravity Knives. These grip plates are retained by three flush rivets. The names of the two allies “Germany” and “Austria” have been carved into either side of the grip plates, respectively. The carving appears to have been a fairly amateur job and possibly was done by an American GI. The blade of this piece is in very choice condition, still being in a mint state and having its original grained surfaces. It is a single edge penknife style blade with fingernail slot. The blade is marked “Omega Solingen” in the ricasso. A nice, original wartime item here. Excellent Plus. $125.00

FK3 - 007 - 27016 - LUFTWAFFE FIGHTING KNIFE - NO MAKER

This is the traditional WWII fighting knife, having the two wood grip plates which are shaped to a grip hold. The wood grip plates are made of oak and have a nice, tight grain. They are retained by three steel rivets which have dressed heads on the obverse and a good attempt at the same on the reverse. The quillon is a short variety, having rounded ends. The scabbard is a tube steel variety being straight throughout and having outstanding original black paint. This black paint is in 100% condition and still has the original luster in its surfaces. The reverse of the scabbard is fitted with the alligator style clips which were used as a belt hold or a hold to affix the trench knife into a boot. A fine scabbard here! The blade is an outstanding example, which still has all of its brightness and all of the cross graining is also visible. This blade is a single edge variety which has a false edge at the top which comes back to about the halfway point. This blade is in near full mint condition, having only a couple of very slight age signs, but they are nothing. The obverse ricasso is stamped with a Luftwaffe stick bird marking having the number “6" in his belly. This is an outstanding Luftwaffe fighting knife. You will look a long time to find one nicer than this example.Mint Minus. $395.00

FK3 - 008 - 26453 - FIGHTING KNIFE - PUMA

The Puma fighting knife is always a popular artifact with collectors of these interesting edged weapons. This example is identical to the piece which is shown on Page 315, far right, of Volume VII of the Johnson book. The grip plates are a dark brown/purple color Bakelite. They are smooth and are rounded at the pommel top. These Bakelite grip plates are in perfect condition and are retained by three rivets. There are no heads on these rivets, as they have been smoothed to fit flush at the plate surfaces. The cross guard is an aluminum oval shaped type which is smooth throughout. The scabbard is a fine, tube-like steel which tapers to a tip at the bottom. The scabbard paint is all original and shows some mild usage, but overall rates at about 95%. There is one spring style metal clip at the reverse, which is retained by two rivets. The blade of this example is still quite bright and appears to have most of its original graining in the polished surfaces. It is the style blade which has a single edge, short ricasso and a false edge at the top which goes back to almost the halfway point. This blade does not show any edge sharpening; however, it does look to be slightly curved at the tip. This may have been the result of usage, but it is not quite as pointy as we would normally see these blades. Other than this, though, the blade rates in a near mint condition. The reverse ricasso is marked with the Puma cat within a diamond and the name of the firm below the head. On either side of the diamond figure is the firm’s trademark “Fabrik Mark”. Below this is the firm’s name in capital letters “PUMA”. The blade has been protected by an in-place leather buffer. An excellent example here of a difficult knife to find. Excellent Plus Plus. $495.00

FK3 - 009 - 26726 - K-98 COMBAT BAYONET - F. HERDER A SN.

This K-98 Combat Bayonet is in excellent condition throughout, having good, strong, blued surfaces. There are only a couple of places where the blue is thinning, and they would be at the reverse pommel top, a little on both sides of the cross guard and also a slight amount noticeable on the scabbard shell. All in all, though, a nice, still-blue finish throughout. This bayonet is Waffenamted on the reverse of the pommel with the traditional two stamps. These Waffenamts show an open-winged eagle over the letters “WaA883". It is interesting to note that the mortise button also is Waffenanmted, but the number here is “WaA253". This matches the Waffenamt stamping on the reverse lower ball. The grip plates are the dark purple/brown Bakelite. They are in good condition and are retained by screw and spanner hardware. The screws look to have been out maybe once or twice. The mortise button and lock work well. The scabbard is straight throughout on the obverse, having one small “bb” style dent on the reverse around the center area. It is very minor, however. There is also a fine frog attached to this scabbard. The frog is the traditional K-98 type and it is in near mint condition. It has four-rivet construction with off-white style stitching. This frog also has a retainer loop at the upper section with button hole and aluminum boss. The reverse of the frog is stamped in three lines “0/O576/OO39/43”. The blade of this example is a beauty. It is completely 100% blued and is in choice, untouched condition. The spine has the year of manufacture “40” stamped into its surfaces. The obverse ricasso is stamped with the number “643” which is positioned over a small letter “d”. This number matches the same number stamped into the bayonet obverse throat area. The reverse of the ricasso is stamped with the maker mark “F Herder A. Sn”. A fine example here by a producer not seen too frequently. Near Mint. $395.00

FK3 - 010 - 26772 – CZECH/NAZI PERIOD SG24 BAYONET – DOT

This Czech produced bayonet is Waffenamted with Nazi proof marks. These Waffenamts show an eagle over the number “63”. These markings appear on the center area of the upper pommel and also on the surface of the scabbard lug. After the Germans marched into Czechoslovakia in March of 1938, the Czech firm which had been producing these bayonets continued to do so, except they were now under the auspices of the Germans and were therefore German proof marked. This beautiful piece appears to be completely un-issued. It is slightly longer and thinner than a K-98 version. It has 100% blue finish throughout all areas. In fact, this bayonet is new-like in all ways. The mortise and rifle lock work well. The grip plates are a dark wood which appear to perhaps be oak or walnut. These grip plates are in totally perfect condition, showing a fine grain and no flaws whatsoever. They are retained with a spanner and rivet method and these hardware pieces appear to have never been removed. These wood grips have the little breather slot at the bottom center area of both plates. The cross guard is rounded on one end and has a cup-like slotted surface on the other which, assumedly, would accomodate the barrel of a rifle. It is also interesting to note that there are two rivets which have dressed heads on both sides and appear to go directly through the cross guard and blade assembly. The scabbard of this example is completely perfect and new-like in every way with 100% blue finish. As noted above, the lug is waffenamted. There is also a mint-conditioned K-98 frog on this scabbard. The frog is the traditional, slightly rough style black leather with off-white stitching. It is four-rivet construction. This frog has some stampings on the back which are mostly illegible, but I can make out the date “1942” on the reverse. The blade of this piece could not be nicer. It has full blue service and is slightly thinner and longer than the K-98 types. The serial number “5128” over the small letter “a” is stamped into the obverse ricasso. The reverse ricasso has the letters “dot”. This, assumedly, is the maker of this product. A great display example, and you will not find one in better condition. Mint. $495.00

FK3 - 011 - 26785 - K-98 Combat Bayonet by W.K.C.

This Combat Bayonet shows some usage throughout, and the bluing is beginning to thin here and there. Overall, though, the blue finish is about 85%. The pommel area is stamped on the reverse with the double waffen amts. These are,
“WaA 253”. The same waffen amt stamping appears on the mortise button, as well as the bottom reverse scabbard ball. This example is equipped with the purple color bakelite grips. They are retained by screw and spanner hardware. The screws have been out a couple of times, but they are not in bad condition. The scabbard of this example has a couple of ripples in the surface, where it looks as though an old dent may have been removed. It does not look bad, however, and other than this, still has most of the original blue finish. The scabbard is stamped on the throat obverse area, “3304”, which also matches the stamping on the blade. The reverse of the scabbard is stamped with the maker mark, “W.K.C.”, which is the same is stamped on the reverse ricasso. There is a K-98 frog, which is unmarked. This frog is the standard rougher black leather type, having 4-rivet construction, and off-white thread. The blade itself is a good example, showing some in-and-out time, but still it has most of the bluing in the surface, and still retains its nice fresh shape. The spine area is stamped with the date of production, “40”. All in all, a nice matching K-98 bayonet showing some actual combat usage. Excellent, Plus (26785) $275.00

FK3 - 021 -25777 – K-98 Combat Bayonet – “41 ASW” (E&F Hörster)

This K-98 Bayonet has a good, blue finish throughout. The finish is beginning to thin a little bit on the scabbard, but still rates at least 98% throughout. The hilt section of this bayonet has all of the bluing and there is just a little bit of age staining that appears on the obverse pommel area. It is not rust, however, as it is not into the surfaces. The mortise button and lock work well. The mortise button, as well as the back of the upper pommel, is Waffen amted with the stampings, “WaA883.” These Waffen amts match the one stamped on the reverse lower scabbard ball. The grip plates are the dark purple color Bakelite. These grip plates show a little bit of usage, but basically, they are in good condition. The screws and spanners are also in good condition showing heads that may have been out once or twice. The blade is a fine example, having nearly all of the blued finish. It shows a little bit of in and out usage and just a slight ripple at the tip. The blade is stamped on the obverse with the serial number, “3265,” which matches that stamped into the scabbard upper obverse throat area. Below the stamping is a small letter, “h.” The reverse of the ricasso is stamped, “41 asw.” This code indicates that the bayonet was produced in 1941 by the E & F Hörster Company. The scabbard is mostly straight throughout, having just a tiny ding on the reverse and obverse, but having the same, exact, angle. It is tough to see this ding, though, and it is really not a problem. The bayonet is equipped with a typical combat-style frog, having the retainer loop at the upper area complete with the aluminum boss. This combat frog is of four-rivet construction and shows wear commensurate with the bayonet. A good, standard, example here that has all of the proper markings. Excellent plus, plus $265.00

FK3 - 031 - K/98 COMBAT POSTAL BAYONET

This rare bayonet, at first glance, looks like a normal combat style example. It reflects a blued finish throughout the hilt which appears to be 100%. There is some minor age in the finish, but it is only in the form of minor staining and no rust or pitting. The pommel is void of the usual inspection marks as is the lower scabbard ball. The grip plates are the dark purple bake-o-lite variety. These grip plates are in perfect condition and they are retained by blue screws with spanners. The screw heads are positioned straight up and down and they do not appear to have ever been turned. The scabbard also has a good blued finish. There is just the slightest of age in the surfaces, but the bluing is still all there rating at 100%. There is a frog attached to the scabbard which is original to this piece. The frog is not the normal rough textured leather we see on K/98s. This frog is a brown leather dress type. It does show some scuffing and some age, but overall, it is still in very good condition and a little brown polish would bring it back very nicely. It is interesting to note that the reverse of the frog is stamped in two lines, "DRP" and beneath this, "Lzg". I believe that these stampings stand for the Deutsches Reich Postal System. The abbreviation beneath would be for the city of Liepzig. The blade of this example is also blued and is in excellent condition. The finish is slightly rough, but it was made this way. The bluing is about 99%. The obverse ricasso of this blade is stamped with a serial number, "13623" and beneath this the two capital letters, "R.P.". The reverse ricasso is three line stamped, "Paul Weyersberg / and Company / Solingen". This is the second one of these K/98 Postal examples I have had. They are very rare and this one is in an untouched, very collectible state. A great item for the K/98 collectors out there.
Excellent Plus (23650) $495.00

FK3 - 033 - K-98 COMBAT BAYONET - E. Pack

This K-98 Combat Bayonet has an outstanding original blue finish which is near 100% throughout the hilt, scabbard and blade. The hilt has fine purple color bake-o-lite grip plates. The screws look like they have been turned maybe once or twice, but there is no problem with them. The reverse upper pommel top is double stamped with the waffen ampted number, "253". This also matches on the lower scabbard ball. The fine blade is a very dark color blue and shows just some slight amount of age in the surfaces but it still looks near mint. This blade is serial numbered on the obverse ricasso, "9951". This matches the number which is stamped into the upper scabbard obverse area. It is also possible to see the number, "8973" which is covered over by some stampings which look like ellipse figures. (This stamping is definitely factory done and accordingly, this is a matching numbered bayonet. The reverse of the bayonet is stamped, "E. Pack & S." The scabbard is equipped with an odd style black leather frog. This frog is shorter than most as it barely covers the lug area. It is also narrow and straight on the back area which contains the belt loop. There is also a retainer loop with boss and button hole for keeping the bayonet in place for mounted use or for marching. This frog is of four rivet construction and it is in excellent plus to near mint condition matching the condition of the bayonet. A nice item here and a rarely seen frog.
Mint Minus (23940) $425.00

FK3 - 034 - K-98 COMBAT BAYONET - Cul (E. Pack)

This choice example has nearly 100% blue throughout. The grip plates are the purple color bake-o-lite. The screws do not look to have been turned. The upper reverse pommel area is double stamped with the two waffen amts. These waffen amts have the number, "519" and they also match the one which is stamped on the reverse of the lower scabbard ball. The obverse blade ricasso has the number, "8392" which matches that stamped into the upper obverse scabbard. The reverse is marked, "Cul" and there appears to be a lightly stamped digit in front of this marking but I can not make it out. The blade is in full mint condition having 100% bluing. The scabbard is also a real beauty and I notice that the lug has no decorative grooves in it. (This may have been a later tactic to save costs. The fine frog is a standard K-98 type which has the rougher black color finish. It is of four rivet construction, and it too, is in near full mint condition. A very fine K-98 here.
Mint (23939) $395.00

FK3 - 039 - 24402 - K-98 COMBAT BAYONET WITH NAVAL PROOFED FROG - E.u.F. Hörster

This is an outstanding conditioned Combat Bayonet which has nearly full 100% blue finish. The hilt grips are the darker purple style bake-o-lite. The screws and spanner which retain them look to have been out once or twice. The reverse upper pommel has been double waffen amt, stamped. The stamping is, "WaA253". The mortise button is also waffen amt as is the reverse of the lower scabbard ball. The scabbard is straight throughout and has very fine blued finish. There is a couple of signs of age on the reverse center area, but it is not bad and does not show from the front. The blade of this piece is a very choice example having quality finish. The spine is stamped, "39" indicating this bayonet was produced in 1939. The obverse ricasso has the serial number, "176" with a small, "a" beneath. This matches the number stamped on the upper scabbard fitting. The reverse ricasso has the name of the producer stamped into it, "E.u.F. Hörster". The frog on this example is a typical K-98 type and it is in good condition. This frog is stamped on the back with a maker marking, but in addition, has an open winged eagle with swastika positioned over the capital letter, "M". This would indicate that this frog was issued to the German Navy. It makes for a most interesting K-98 bayonet here, as obviously the Kriegsmarine did not have many bayonets. They would have primarily been worn by personnel on guard duty, etc. A good looking example here and probably quite rare.
Near Mint $495.00

FK3 - 046 - 24510 - K98 BAYONET – Mundlos

This K98 bayonet is in excellent condition throughout. The blue finish appears to be at least 98% throughout the hilt, blade and scabbard. The hilt is double-stamped with Waffen amts on the reverse pommel lip. The stampings are, “WaA243”. A matching stamping also is stamped into the reverse lower chape. The grip plates are the dark purple bake-o-lite type. They are in good shape throughout, although there is a small rub on the reverse top left edge. Other than this though, they are perfect. These grip plates are retained by screw and spanner hardware, the screw heads pointing straight up-and-down. The blade is an excellent example, and it is stamped with a serial number, “7375” over the small letter “d”. This matches the number stamped on the obverse of the scabbard. The blade's spine is stamped with the number, “39”, which would be the year of manufacture. The reverse ricasso is stamped with the maker name, “Mundlos”. The scabbard is straight throughout, and as indicated above, has excellent blue finish. There is a frog on this example. The frog is a rough-textured type leather, and has four rivet type construction. It is maker-marked on the back, and also has the stamping, “B”. There are also other stampings, which look like “IIJ.R.” This frog also has a cut out where a securing strap could have been placed. The strap is not there though, and there is no way to tell if it ever was. A good Combat Bayonet here.
Excellent plus plus $295.00
