FIRE DEPARTMENT LONG AND SHORT BAYONET SECTION

Volunteer Fire Department forces were permitted to wear a special dress bayonet. It was similar to the K-98 Dress Bayonet, except there are two quillons in the crossguard design instead of only one. The left example sweeps upward, while the right example sweeps downward. There is no rifle mounting slot provision in the hilt. The bakelite checkered grip plates, blade, scabbard and carrying frog are identical to that of the K-98 Dress Bayonet. The bayonet was available in short, long or sawbacked blade.

FDBAY - 001 - FIREMAN LONG BAYONET - No Maker.

The hilt of this example is a beauty, having original factory bright nickel-plated finish and rating in mint condition. The grip plates are the black checkered bakelite variety. They are beauties being retained with nickel rivets having dressed obverse heads. The scabbard is straight throughout. It has fine bright black paint. This paint shows only normal wear and rates at nearly mint. There is a fine black leather frog which rates in near mint condition. The long blade has a wide fuller construction. This choice blade has a factory bright nickel-plated finish. It is easily in a full mint state. The black leather blade buffer is in place. Fine example.

This blade has outstanding nickel plated surfaces, and remains in near full mint condition. The blade is protected by the in-place brown leather washer. FDBAY - 003 -26743C - Fireman’s Long Bayonet by Alcoso

The plating to the hilt of this Fireman’s Bayonet is all there. It is slightly dull, as it has not been cleaned, but I’m sure if it were cleaned up, it would be in mint condition. I notice that the Alcoso up-and-down quillon arms appear to be slightly shorter than those we see on other producer’s. The grip plates are the black checkered variety, and they both are in excellent condition. They are retained by nickel plated steel rivets, having dressed heads on the obverse. The scabbard is in good straight condition. The scabbard paint shows only the most mild of age in the surfaces, and has only a few scratches and carrying signs. This paint is still in near mint condition. The long style blade has wide fuller construction. The blade is a quality nickel plated item, and it is mirror bright, and remains in mint condition. It consists of a set of scales, having the firm’s initials “ACS”, interspersed. Above the scales in an arch shape is the firm’s name in block letters, “Alcoso”, and below, the location town of “Solingen”. The original black leather washer is in place. Excellent, Plus, Plus (26743-C) $195.00

FDBAY - 004 -26769 - Fireman’s Long Bayonet – No Maker

The grip plates are in excellent condition being the black checkered bakelite. They are retained by solid nickel rivets having dressed heads on the obverse. The scabbard of this example has a small “b b” style ding at the left edge about half way down. Other than this, the scabbard is straight. It has excellent original black paint, which rates at near 100%, and is in near full mint condition. There is also a fine black leather frog. It is the style that has a single rivet in the reverse. This frog is in near mint condition. The blade of this example is the long style, having wide fuller construction. It has excellent nickel plated surfaces, and it is in mint condition. FDBAY - 006 -26386C - Fireman’s Long Bayonet by C. Gustav Spitzer

This Fireman’s Bayonet has a choice nickel plated hilt. The plating still remains bright, and is 100% throughout. This plating does show some usage in the surfaces, but still is in nice condition. The grip plates are the black checkered bakelite type. They are in perfect condition and are retained by nickel plated rivets, having dressed heads on the obverse. The scabbard is a blued variety, and appears to be almost a K-98 style, but could very well be original to this piece. The bluing is near 100% on this scabbard. There is also a K-98 style frog, which is affixed to this scabbard. The frog is the typical rougher style black leather, with off-white stitching. It is of 2-rivet construction, and is in excellent condition. The long style blade of this example has wide fuller construction. This blade is nice and bright, having quality nickel plating, and is in mint condition. The reverse ricasso is marked with a circle logo, which around the circle has the name and location of the producing firm, “C. Gustav Spitzer, Solingen”. FDBAY - 007 -26379C - Fireman’s Short Bayonet by E. & F. Hörster

This Fireman’s Short Bayonet has good nickel plating to the hilt. The pommel area shows some minor usage, and some minor age, but the plating still appears to be all there. The grip plates are the black checkered bakelite variety. They are in good condition throughout, and are retained by nickel plated rivets having dressed heads on the obverse. A good attempt was also made to dress the heads on the reverse. The scabbard of this example is nice and straight, and has fine factory-bright original black paint. Inside is the large “H” letter with the smaller letters “h & s” inside, being pierced by a sword. The black leather blade washer is in place. A fine Fireman’s Bayonet here.Near Mint (26379-C) $295.00

FDBAY - 008 - 26744C - Long Fireman Bayonet with No Scabbard by C. Gustav Spitzer

This Long Fireman Bayonet is without a scabbard, but man, is it a nice looking item! The hilt fittings have 100% of the nickel plating, and the plating is still as bright as the day it was done. The grip plates are the black checkered bakelite, and they are also in choice crisp condition. These plates are retained by nickel plated rivets, having dressed heads on the obverse. These rivets still retain all of their plating. The long style blade is quality nickel plated, and also is factory-new, in mint condition. The blade is the style with wide fuller construction. If you have a mint scabbard to go with this piece, it will make for a tremendous Fire Department addition. This bayonet is in mint condition throughout.Mint (26379-C) $225.00

FDBAY - 009 - 4403C - GILDED SENIOR FIRE DEPARTMENT BAYONET WITH DOUBLE ETCHED BLADE - C. GUSTAV SPITZER

This Fire Department bayonet has a gilded finish, a double-etched blade with gilded backgrounds and a Party Eagle etched into the pommel. It is the first example of this treatment that I have seen and I assume that it was made up for possibly a retiring senior Fire Department Official. The bayonet hilt is a standard fireman’s variety, having the silhouette of an eagle pommel and the cross guards having the up and down quillon arms. The piece has been gilded with a muted style gold, looking very similar to that of the gilding used on Marine NSKKs. The gilding is thinning only on the very edges of the piece but still rates at 99%. The obverse pommel area has an open-winged Party style eagle perfectly etched into the surfaces. This eagle looks to the viewer’s left and grasps a wreathed swastika in his talons. The grip plates are the standard black Bakelite type having good checkered finish. These plates are retained by steel style rivets with domed heads. The rivets look as though they also have had a gilded finish at one time, but most of it is worn off. These grips are just slightly loose at the top rivet, which could be caused by shrinkage of the Bakelite material. Other than this, they are in perfect condition. The blade of this example is a standard long style having wide fuller construction. It is double-etched, using the WKC style pattern which is shown on Pages 235 and 236 of the Wayne Techet book. The obverse of the blade depicts the same open-winged eagle as used on the pommel etching. This eagle has excellent detail throughout and is followed by the standard “memory of my service” slogan which flanks both sides of the bird. The panel is bordered with oak leaves. The reverse of the blade depicts an entire panel of oak leaf and acorn sprigs. The blade ricasso is deeply stamped with the producer’s round logo consisting of a prancing lion with his tongue out. Around the circle is the firm’s name and location “C. Gustav Spitzer Solingen”. This blade has been nickel plated and shows only modest age. It is still in near full mint condition. The brown blade leather washer is in place and it is the style that is installed over the shoulders, not under. The scabbard is standard in every way, being free of dents and having a good black paint job. The period paint shows a little bit of crazing in the surfaces and is in better condition on the reverse than on the obverse. Overall, though, the scabbard paint is about 98%. There is also a patent leather frog which shows some mild attic crazing, but it is still serviceable. The frog has a field gray felt backing on the reverse which shows some age but is still all there. A most interesting Fire Department piece here, and something which more than likely is one of a kind.$1,195.00

FDBAY - 010 - 22641 - FIREMAN’S LONG BAYONET - CARL EICKHORN

This hilt of this Fireman’s Bayonet retains all of its nickel plating and it is still nice and bright throughout. This hilt plating is easily in near full mint condition. The pommel features the silhouette eagle head and the cross guards are the up and down style quillon arms typical of Fire Department weapons. The scabbard is straight throughout, having excellent original black paint. This paint shows only the most modest of age and is still near 100%. There is an outstanding matching black leather frog which is also in near full mint condition. The long style blade features quality nickel plated finish with wide fuller construction. This blade is in mint condition and the reverse ricasso is stamped with the 1935-41 squirrel logo. The original blade washer is in place. A fine example here. Near Mint. $225.00(#043008)

FDBAY - 011 - 26874 - FIREMAN’S LONG BAYONET - PETER DAN KREBS

It is rare to see a Krebs marked Fireman’s Bayonet, and this one should, therefore, have some more than normal interest. The hilt fittings of this example have excellent nickel plated surfaces. There is a little bit of wear to the reverse pommel area attributed to swing, but the rest of the plating is still all there and is in bright condition. This plating just shows the most modest of age. The grip plates are the standard black checkered Bakelite type. They are retained by nickel rivets having dressed heads on the obverse. The scabbard is straight throughout and has good original black paint. This paint shows a little bit of usage in the surfaces of both sides, but it is still bright and rates at about 95%. There is a fine original black leather frog. This frog is still nice and sound, having a few scuffs but nonetheless in good condition and having the quality single rivet in the reverse. The blade of this example is the long type having wide fuller construction. It is still in mirror bright condition throughout and is mint. The reverse of the blade is deeply etched with the shield shaped logo having a lobster inside. Around the logo is the name and location of the firm written in block letters “PET.DAN-KREBS.SOLINGEN”. The original brown leather washer is in place. A most interesting bayonet here. Near Mint. $295.00

FDBAY - 012 - FIREMAN SHORT SAW BACK BAYONET - No Maker

The hilt plating of this example shows just a mild bit of wear around the lower pommel area of both sides but other than this, the plating is perfect. The base metal of this example is steel indicating it is of early vintage. The grip plates are the black checkered bake-o-lite type and they are retained by solid nickel rivets. The rivets have dressed heads on the obverse with a great attempt on the reverse. The short blade is the stepped variety having narrow fuller. It could not be nicer, having beautiful nickel plating and still remaining in mint condition. The top edge has the fierce saw back cut into it and it really looks great. The original brown leather blade washer is in place. The scabbard is also in good condition being nice and straight and having very fine original black paint. This black paint shows almost no age and is in near full mint condition. A very nice, highest quality saw back.
Near Mint (20552) $495.00

FDBAY - 019 - FIREMAN LONG BAYONET - HMH

This beautiful example has pristine hilt fittings. The nickel-plated surfaces look like they were done yesterday. This is a quality bayonet as it also has a steel base. The nickel plating is completely factory fresh and mint. The crisp grip plates are an early style and they are the black checkered variety. These crisp plates are retained by two nickel rivets, the obverse heads being dressed. The scabbard is straight throughout and has choice original black paint. This paint shows only the slightest signs of age and is still in near full mint condition. There is a frog attached which is a rich dark brown color. This frog has a fine luster to it and is a quality example. This frog has four-rivet retainage. The blade itself is the best you will see. It is a long style having wide fuller. The nickel plating is totally perfect and fully in mint condition. The obverse of the blade ricasso is lightly marked with a small circle. Inside the circle are three letters which are all interconnected. These letters are, "HMH". I do not remember seeing a bayonet with these markings before. I assume it is the monogram of a distributor. The original, new-like tan leather blade buffer is in place. A very choice Fireman's bayonet here.
Mint (23022) $225.00

FDBAY - 020 - EARLY FIREMAN'S SHORT BAYONET - WKC

This Bayonet is a rare early variation and should be of interest to Fire Department collectors or bayonet collectors. It has an early steel based hilt and reflects quality nickel plating. The nickeling is still 100% throughout being bright and showing little age. It is interesting to note that the up and down quillons, which are typical of fire department bayonets, are slightly longer on this example than they are on later types. The practiced eye will notice this extra length immediately. Also, the grip plates are the early bake-o-lite type having outstanding checkering. These plates are in perfect condition and are retained by solid nickel rivets having dressed heads. The short scabbard has good original paint being nearly perfect on the reverse, and showing only a little bit of age on the obverse, but still rating at about 97%. This original paint is in near mint condition. There is a leather frog attached to the scabbard. This frog is in good shape showing some usage, and it could use a little bit of polish, but otherwise, it is in good shape. It is the style with quality rivet in the rear. The blade, though, tells the whole story to this piece. It is a short style stepped-edge blade having narrow fuller. The nickel-plated surfaces are highest quality throughout. The reverse of the blade is totally perfect and mint. The obverse has just a little bit of edge scratching where someone tried to sharpen it unsuccessfully. It is not bad, though, and possibly could rub out with some effort. The interesting part, though, is the trademark. It shows the knighthead stamping, but it is the style that does not have the lines in the comb or the faceplate of the helmet. This is an early style logo stamping that was used just as the Nazis came to power. The knighthead appears over the firm's initials and location, "WKC Solingen". The original blade buffer has gone to time. This is the first example I have seen of this early variation. A good collectible here for Bayonet guys.
Near Mint (23174) $225.00

FDBAY - 021 - FIREMAN SAW BACK SHORT BAYONET - No Maker

This Bayonet is one of the early high quality types. The very heavy hilt is steel base metal. The hilt has been beautifully nickel-plated and the nickeling is still nice and bright throughout. There are a couple of age spots around the pommel, but they are really nothing, as the nice shine and quality plating overcomes this small flaw. The grip plates are the early black bake-o-lite type having very crisp checkering. These grip plates are retained by solid nickel rivets which have dressed heads on the obverse. The scabbard of this example is as fine as you will see. It is straight throughout and has lustrous bright original paint. This paint is in mint condition. Attached to the choice scabbard is an equally nice frog. This black leather frog is in pristine condition throughout and easily rates a full mint. The short style blade is quality nickel-plated. It is bright throughout and easily rates in full mint condition. The back spine is equipped with a very nasty sharp saw back. The workmanship to this saw back blade is fantastic. This blade is equipped with a short ricasso and it is unmarked. The original leather blade buffer is in place. An outstanding saw back bayonet here of highest quality production. Were it not for the small plating flaw on the pommel it would easily grade full mint. As such it is still a beauty.
Mint Minus (23266) $495.00

FDBAY - 026 - FIREMAN'S LONG DRESS BAYONET - No Maker

This Fireman's Bayonet looks almost as though it just came out of the factory showroom. The hilt fittings are as crisp as the day they were cast and the nickel plating is totally mirror bright and in perfect condition. It is quite rare to see a bayonet in this state. The grip plates are the black checkered variety and they are in perfect condition. They are retained by two solid nickel rivets which have dressed heads on the obverse. The long style blade is the type with wide fuller construction. It reflects outstanding mirror bright quality nickel-plated finish. It could not be nicer and is in full mint condition. The blade has been protected all these years by a new like tan leather washer which is still in place. The scabbard is as nice as the rest of the piece. It reflects original black paint which shows almost no age. There are a couple of tiny spiders in the surfaces, but these are the only signs that this is an old paint job. Beautiful scabbard here in full mint condition. Unfortunately, there is no frog. You could not find a nicer Fireman's Bayonet, however.
(23921) $225.00

FDBAY - 030 - 9843 – FIREMAN’S LONG BAYONET – No Maker

The hilt plating of this Fireman’s example is nice and bright throughout and is easily at 100%. This plating is mint. The grip plates are the typical black bake-o-lite checkered type. They are retained by solid nickel rivets having dressed heads on the obverse. The long style blade is also a beauty having high quality nickel-plated finish. This blade has wide fuller construction and is in mint condition. It is protected by the in-place, brown leather buffer. The scabbard is straight throughout, the obverse having a small ding on the reverse lower area but it is nothing. The scabbard paint has some spidering in the surfaces. This paint, though, still rates at approximately 95%. There is a larger style black frog which is more of a Police type, but it appears original to this piece. This frog is in good condition throughout. A fine overall condition long fireman’s bayonet.
Near Mint $195.00

FDBAY - 032 - 25993 - FIRE DEPARTMENT LONG BAYONET - CARL WÜSTHOFF

The hilt of this Fire Department example reflects outstanding nickel plated finish. This nickel plating is 100% throughout and retains its factory brightness. The grip plates are the black Bakelite type, having fine checkering. They are retained by nickel plated rivets having dressed heads on the obverse. The blade is as nice as they come. It is a long style with wide fuller construction. The nickel plated finish is easily in full mint condition. The reverse ricasso is stamped in two small arches facing each other. The top arch is “Carl Wüsthoff”, and the bottom arch is “Solingen”. The black leather blade washer is in place. The scabbard is nice and straight and has good original paint. This paint has some spidering in the finish, but, overall, it is still about 98%. There is no frog. A nice overall example.Near Mint. $225.00

FDBAY - 033 - 25969C - EARLY FIREMAN SHORT BAYONET

This Fireman’s bayonet appears to be of early quality. The hilt fittings are really outstanding, being of the finest of steel and reflecting high-quality nickel plating. This plating is 100% intact and retains its original factory brightness. The quillons and pommel seem to be just slightly bigger than the ones we normally see. The grip plates are also highest quality. They are a Bakelite, but somehow the checkering is deeper and crisper. These plates are retained by nickel rivets having dressed heads on the obverse. A really outstanding, mint conditioned quality hilt here. The blade is a short style having narrow fuller. Although the plating is bright and highest of quality, there is a little bit of flaking just at the very tip and also at the point where the ricasso turns into the blade. These are very minor things and given the overall quality throughout this bayonet, they can be overlooked. Aside from these flaws, the blade is in mint condition. The reverse ricasso has the stamping “lh”. This could either be a distributor, or possibly the initials of the original owner. This bayonet has a most unusual green felt buffer, still being in perfect condition. It adds a little color to the example and I am sure it is original to this piece. The scabbard is straight throughout and has good original paint. This paint does have some age and a few chips in it, but overall, it is about 98% and certainly rates excellent plus plus. There is a good black leather frog which is also in fine condition throughout and extremely serviceable. This frog rates in near mint condition. Overall, a fine quality bayonet here and a pleasure to hold in one’s hand. Near Mint. $250.00

FDBAY - 035 - 25165 – Fireman’s Long Bayonet

This Fireman’s Long bayonet hilt has beautiful perfect nickel plating throughout the pommel, and the over-and-under crossguard. This plating could not be nicer. The black checkered grip plates are in perfect condition. They are retained by steel rivets, having dressed heads on the obverse. The scabbard paint is nice and bright, and other than just a couple of the slightest signs of usage, is in mint condition. The frog is a black example, showing minor age only. This frog is equipped with a Fireman’s dress knot. This knot has black strapping, with three gold color stitches, which run the length. The slide is a thong-like leather example, having gold wire trim. The flat stem is the crochet-like type, and the yarn-like bullion ball, is of pink and silver bullion. The lower insert is a pink velvet type. The long style blade has the wide fuller design. The nickel plating throughout this blade is a quality example, and is in mint condition. The reverse ricasso is stamped, with the 1935 through 1941, squirrel trademark. This blade is protected by an in-place leather blade buffer. An extremely fine example here.Mint $350.00
